Fri, 28 Dec 2012 06:03:01 -0800 Direct Sales Business - 5 Reasons Why It Might Be Perfect For You http://mucimetam.posterous.com/direct-sales-business-5-reasons-why-it-might http://mucimetam.posterous.com/direct-sales-business-5-reasons-why-it-might

What is direct sales business? Wikipedia defines it as ?marketing and selling of products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail location?. It also often, but not always, uses multi level marketing or network marketing as a business model.

Direct sales business is not everyone?s cup of tea, that?s for sure. Some people just don?t have the necessary drive to succeed. Like any business, it requires self discipline, belief and hard work to succeed.

1. Be your own boss.

You?ve worked for others long enough. You?re ready to strike out on your own and start your own direct sales or network marketing business. Be sure you have done some research about what owning your own business entails before charging forward with your plan. Know how much your initial fees will be, how many other associates are in your area, and what kind of compensation plan is available with the company you choose.

2. Success breeds success.

Someone you know may be working in a direct sales company in a different town from where you live. She?s very successful at what she does and her enthusiasm is contagious. She invites you to be part of her team, but take your time making a decision.

Before you sign that contract and pay for your start-up kit, do some research to see how successful she really is, as well as doing some checking on her upline. If you find that they have a successful upline that is supportive of her, as well as a satisfied downline, perhaps now is the time to sign on.

3. Belief is important.

You have found a product that you feel is perfect. It does exactly what it was advertised to do, and it is something you can?t see yourself doing without. In fact, you?ve told all of your friends about it because it?s so good. If this describes you, you may have found the perfect direct sales company to work with.

You must love the product your company offers in order to be successful at selling it. This is the first, and most important, decision to make before choosing a direct sales company. If you don?t love, use, and believe in the products you sell, it will be evident to those you approach.

4. Do you love it?

If the direct sales company you are considering is associated with an activity, is that activity something you?re passionate about? Having a passion about scrapbooking, cooking, or whatever the activity, will help your customers see that you?re trying to share something with them rather than trying to ?sell them something?.

5. How flexible are you?

Are your children at an age where they don?t need you quite as much as they used to? If you have some flexibility in your schedule, direct sales might be a viable option. Not only can you choose the days and times that you work, you also have some degree of control over what you earn. If you are serious about growing a business, you are only limited by the amount of time and effort you use to do so.

If you think you have found the direct sales company that you can get behind 100%, congratulations! Take your time learning all you can learn and then step out into your new life. You may find, after doing your research, that you and direct sales are perfect together ? a match made in heaven.

However, in addition to the 5 points made before you should also check whether your company or upline provides training so you can build your business using modern, Internet based strategies. Building your direct sales business online is the most effective way to reach a massive amounts of interested people. It has to be done correctly though and that?s why we provide you training and tools that work with any network marketing and direct sales business. Click here to learn more.

Fri, 28 Dec 2012 04:11:46 -0800 Building Your Dream Home in Mexico ? Different Styles Part 2 http://mucimetam.posterous.com/building-your-dream-home-in-mexico-different http://mucimetam.posterous.com/building-your-dream-home-in-mexico-different

Happy Boxing Day to all my fellow Canadians, and along with them, I hope everyone else is still enjoying the festive season!

Two days ago, on Christmas Eve, I talked about 2 styles for having your?Mexico homes built ? modern luxury and classic colonial. Today, I?ll introduce two more of the most popular styles for building a home in Mexico.

Mexico Home Patio Bar with Palapa

Contemporary Mayan

One architect from the Playa del Carmen real estate area, Gian Luca, includes some sort of Mayan symbol or element in each building he designs, (provided the owner approves, of course.)? The Mayan culture is rich in symbols, history and style which can be incorporated into contemporary designs and lay outs.

Mexico Home Patio Bar with Palapa

Even the modern Mayan people with their thatched roofs and simple homes offer inspiration for a modern style that incorporate this simple elegance with contemporary spatial concepts.? This culture is unique, in that after the Spanish conquest almost 500 years ago, after independence and after the modernization of Mexico, they Mayan people have retained their traditional lifestyle living in close proximity and harmony with the nature surrounding their villages; the architectural style inspired by them offers this same harmony.

Mexico Home Patio Bar with Palapa

Various other indigenous peoples of Mexico have likewise offered inspiration for contemporary styles that capture the essence of their unique way of life and values which the modern world has largely lost; among these are the Purepecha of Michoacan near Morelia.

Indoor-Outdoor

Because of Mexico?s warm climate, there are a significant number of Americans and Canadians who enjoy what is called indoor-outdoor living; very large terraces with pools can be combined with open-space living and dining areas by folding away glass walls.? This makes for a very relaxing lifestyle taking the idea of ?open concept? to new heights.? Of course airflow is at its best! Even when closed, these glass walls outdo even the largest of windows offering spectacular views of the ocean(for example, from the hillside in the Puerto Vallarta real estate), the jungle or the town.

Mexico Home

Another example is the lakefront cottages with rustic charm and items like fireplaces, which are popular on Lake Chapala and near Morelia.

Mexico Home

These are just a few examples of the most popular ideas.? There are many other possibilities to consider when for building a dream home in Mexico!

Andy Welbourne, from London, Ontario, has been living in Playa del Carmen and working as a part of the team with Thomas Lloyd for 7 years. He has worked with many Canadians and Americans to assist in finding their dream home in the Mexican Caribbean; many of these clients have turned into great friendships. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wears a decal on his helmet Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, in tribute to the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 8:26 p.m. ET: Americans came together in the thousands Sunday to honor the memories of the 26 victims of the shootings at a Connecticut High School.

This Sunday was Gaudete Sunday, the Advent observance of joy and celebration, but in churches and cathedrals across the country, the message was one of reassurance and comfort for the distressed and the afflicted.

Hundreds of people signed a book of condolences and prayed special prayers Sunday morning at Our Lady of the Cross Parish in Holyoke, Mass.

"I lost a little child once, just a matter of days old, and that's still with me although it's 50 years later," Paula Brunault of Holyoke told NBC station WWLP of Springfield, Mass.

"I just know that prayers surround the people, really and truly. It's the best thing we can do for them," she said.

The Rev. Scott Kubinski, pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish in the Elmira, N.Y., area, denied that the shootings were the will of God. Instead, he told parishioners at St. Casimir's Catholic Church, it was the fruit of the free will that God allows people to have, NBC station WETM of Elmira reported.

"God isn't happy about it, but God is with us through it all, giving us strength," he said. "That's why people do turn to faith in times of sadness and why they turn to prayer."

More than 150 chaplains of the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy of Sacramento, Calif., dressed in full police uniform Sunday and visited churches, restaurants and shopping malls to offer hope.

At Bayside Church, an Evangelical Covenant megachurch in Roseville, Calif., Senior Chaplain Mindi Russell told thousands of families who packed inside to pray for the victims and families of Friday's massacre.

Russell said it was understandable that children were asking why the shooting happened and why so many people were killed.?

As families hugged one another and prayed for the violence to end, Russell reassured the congregation that while there are bad people in the world, there are many more good people, NBC station KCRA of Sacramento reported.

NFL teams also honored the shooting victims, lowering flags to half-staff ?and observing a moment of silence before all of Sunday's games. Some teams brought young children onto the field, and players ? many of them visibly moved ? stood hand in hand with them.

The New England Patriots ? whose owner, Robert Kraft, also owns a box company that has a factory less than a mile from Sandy Hook Elementary School ? were wearing black-ribbon logos on their helmets for Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.?

The Patriots also planned to fire 26 white flares ? one for each of the victims ? at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The New York Giants wore decals bearing the letters SHES ? standing for Sandy Hook Elementary School ? on their helmets Sunday for their game in Atlanta against the Falcons. Coach Tom Coughlin told NFL.com that his team had been "very, very much affected" by the shootings.

The New York Jets were to wear the same decal Monday night for their game against the Tennessee Titans.

Mon, 17 Dec 2012 12:29:29 -0800 Role of oxidative stress in diseases needs to be re-evaluated: Preventive detention for oxidizing agents http://mucimetam.posterous.com/role-of-oxidative-stress-in-diseases-needs-to http://mucimetam.posterous.com/role-of-oxidative-stress-in-diseases-needs-to

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Oxidative stress is believed to cause a number of diseases. Up to now, it has been common practice to measure oxidative stress levels by determining the oxidation state of a small molecule called glutathione in cell extracts. Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) have been the first to discover that cells under stress deposit their oxidized glutathione in a cellular waste repository. This protects cells from oxidative stress -- and questions the validity of the conventional measuring method.

Cancer, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis -- the list of diseases which have been linked to oxidative stress is long and even includes the very process of aging. Oxidative stress is caused by so-called reactive oxygen compounds, which include the notorious "free radicals." If a cell is exposed to more reactive oxygen compounds than it can instantly degrade, it is under oxidative stress. As a result, important components such as proteins, DNA and lipids are oxidized and thus get damaged.

To determine whether a cell is under oxidative stress, scientists often analyze the oxidation state of glutathione. Glutathione is a small molecule which gets oxidized to protect the cell from reactive oxygen compounds. In theory, the amount of oxidized glutathione should therefore indicate whether a cell is healthy or under oxidative stress. However, researchers in the team of Associate Professor (PD) Dr. Tobias Dick have demonstrated that this hypothesis, which is the basis of a large number of scientific studies, is deceptive.

"Up to now, it was necessary to destroy the cells in order to measure the amount of oxidized glutathione," Tobias Dick explains. "However, this means that any spatial resolution is lost." Therefore, virtually nothing was known about where exactly oxidized glutathione is found in the cells. Scientists have presumed that it remains in the cytoplasm, where it is formed.

To find out more about the whereabouts of glutathione in the cell, Tobias Dick and co-workers developed biosensors which indicate the oxidation state of glutathione in intact cells by releasing light signals. In yeast cells, the researchers were able, for the first time, to follow the path of oxidized glutathione through the living cell in real time. They were surprised to find that, rather than remaining in the cytoplasm, it promptly gets locked up in a safe depot, the vacuole.

The cytoplasm, where all important cellular metabolic processes happen, is thus reliably protected from oxidative damage. Cells that would have been considered to be under oxidative stress using the conventional method appeared entirely healthy in their cytoplasm. Tobias Dick and his team could subsequently show that this is not only true for yeast cells but also for various mammalian cells and also for cancer cells.

These results mean that -- contrary to previously held beliefs -- the level of oxidative glutathione does not indicate whether or not a cell is under oxidative stress. "Therefore, it is important to re-evaluate prior studies that have established a link between oxidative stress and various diseases based on the conventional method."

Sat, 03 Nov 2012 04:12:33 -0700 Automated Vehicles are Probably Legal in the United States | Center ... http://mucimetam.posterous.com/automated-vehicles-are-probably-legal-in-the http://mucimetam.posterous.com/automated-vehicles-are-probably-legal-in-the

This paper provides the most comprehensive discussion to date of whether so-called automated, autonomous, self-driving, or driverless vehicles can be lawfully sold and used on public roads in the United States. The short answer is that the computer direction of a motor vehicle?s steering, braking, and accelerating without real-time human input is probably legal. The long answer, contained in the paper, provides a foundation for tailoring regulations and understanding liability issues related to these vehicles.

The paper?s largely descriptive analysis, which begins with the principle that everything is permitted unless prohibited, covers three key legal regimes: the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, regulations enacted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the vehicle codes of all fifty US states.

?

The Geneva Convention, to which the United States is a party, probably does not prohibit automated driving. The treaty promotes road safety by establishing uniform rules, one of which requires every vehicle or combination thereof to have a driver who is ?at all times ... able to control? it. However, this requirement is likely satisfied if a human is able to intervene in the automated vehicle?s operation.

?

NHTSA?s regulations, which include the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to which new vehicles must be certified, do not generally prohibit or uniquely burden automated vehicles, with the possible exception of one rule regarding emergency flashers.

?

State vehicle codes probably do not prohibit?but may complicate?automated driving. These codes assume the presence of licensed human drivers who are able to exercise human judgment, and particular rules may functionally require that presence. New York somewhat uniquely directs a driver to keep one hand on the wheel at all times. In addition, far more common rules mandating reasonable, prudent, practicable, and safe driving have uncertain application to automated vehicles and their users. Following distance requirements may also restrict the lawful operation of tightly spaced vehicle platoons. Many of these issues arise even in the three states that expressly regulate automated vehicles.

?

The primary purpose of this paper is to assess the current legal status of automated vehicles. However, the paper includes draft language for US states that wish to clarify this status. It also recommends five near-term measures that may help increase legal certainty without producing premature regulation. First, regulators and standards organizations should develop common vocabularies and definitions that are useful in the legal, technical, and public realms. Second, the United States should closely monitor efforts to amend or interpret the 1969 Vienna Convention, which contains language similar to the Geneva Convention but does not bind the United States. Third, NHTSA should indicate the likely scope and schedule of potential regulatory action. Fourth, US states should analyze how their vehicle codes would or should apply to automated vehicles, including those that have an identifiable human operator and those that do not. Finally, additional research on laws applicable to trucks, buses, taxis, low-speed vehicles, and other specialty vehicles may be useful. This is in addition to ongoing research into the other legal aspects of vehicle automation.

Fri, 19 Oct 2012 14:00:54 -0700 The hidden burden of bovine Tuberculosis http://mucimetam.posterous.com/the-hidden-burden-of-bovine-tuberculosis http://mucimetam.posterous.com/the-hidden-burden-of-bovine-tuberculosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Up to 21% of herds clearing restrictions for bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) in Great Britain may be harbouring infection, according to a study published in PLOS Computational Biology this week. A cross-disciplinary group of experts in the Disease Dynamics Unit, University of Cambridge and the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency has used mathematical models to provide the first empirical estimates of the efficiency of cattle-based controls for bovine tuberculosis (bTB). These models were developed to help policy-makers understand and control bTB as part of a project funded by Defra.

bTB was previously transmitted from cattle to people in untreated milk. However, stringent measures, including pasteurization, introduced by the British government in the 1930s have practically eliminated the risk to people. A rigorous policy reduced disease in herds to minimal levels in the 1960s, but the past 25 years have seen the disease return; around 26,000 cattle were slaughtered for bTB control in England in 2011 alone.

The models were constructed using data taken from infected herds detected through routine surveillance, either in the slaughterhouse, or through routine whole herd tests between 2003-2005.

"Around 38% of herds officially cleared of disease experience a recurrent incident within 24 months, suggesting that infection persists in herds," said lead author Dr Andrew Conlan. "We developed mathematical models, fitted carefully to extensive surveillance and testing data to estimate the efficiency of testing directly from epidemiological data rather than relying on expert opinion. Another important result is that we estimate a high rate of re-introduction of infection into herds. This suggests that eliminating the hidden burden of infection alone will not be enough to reduce rates of recurrence."

The work focused on what happens within infected herds. These models cannot predict the extent to which hidden infection contributes to transmission between herds. The models also do not distinguish between the relative roles of the badger and cattle in the spread of bTB. Quantifying the persistence of infection at the herd level is an important first step to answering these questions and provides a basis for developing more complex national models of transmission.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez will start the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench.

After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday.

"I'm not happy and obviously disappointed," Rodriguez said. "Want to be in there in the worst way."

Eric Chavez was set to start at third base, while Game 3 star Raul Ibanez will be the designated hitter in the winner-take-all series finale.

"It is difficult. He has meant a lot to the organization, the game of baseball over the years," manager Joe Girardi said. "And he has been a very productive hitter. But he struggled against right-handers in the series, and Chavy has been good against right-handers all year long."

The 37-year-old Rodriguez is 2 for 16 (.125) with no RBIs in the series, going hitless in 12 at-bats against right-handed pitchers with nine strikeouts. He was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the opener against Jason Hammel, Baltimore's Game 5 starter.

Chavez hit .298 against righties during the regular season but is 0 for 4 against them in the playoffs.

Girardi contacted Rodriguez at about 1 p.m., before the 14-time All-Star arrived at Yankee Stadium, and informed him of the decision. Rodriguez took batting practice with the regular starters, not the reserves.

"It's never about Joe," Rodriguez said. "I always have to look in the mirror and do what I can do to do the best I can."

Since helping New York win the 2009 World Series, Rodriguez is 10 for 66 (.152) with no homers and six RBIs in postseason play. He hasn't homered in 84 at-bats since Sept. 14.

With the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning of Game 3, Girardi sent up Ibanez to bat for A-Rod, and Ibanez hit a tying home run. Ibanez homered again in the 12th to give New York a 3-2 win.

Baltimore led 2-1 in the 13th inning in Game 4 when Chavez batted for Rodriguez and lined to third for the final out.

Is getting benched worse than getting pinch hit for?

"I'm not going to get into that," Rodriguez said. "I'm part of this team, and I'm ready to roll, and I'll be ready."

With the Yankees owing Rodriguez $114 million over the next five seasons, managing his decline could become a central issue for the team.

"I ain't worried about years ahead. Just let me worry about today," Girardi said. "The best relationships, the strongest relationships, are always relationships that go through some struggles. Relationships just aren't perfect. I mean, you put a husband and wife together where the relationship was just perfect without any struggles, and you're probably not living on this planet. So relationships go through that.

"So, I mean if things have to be, you know, built back up, we can do that. I have had to do that before. So I don't worry about that."

Fifth on the career list with 647 home runs ? 115 behind Barry Bonds' record ? Rodriguez has been slowed by five trips to the disabled list in five seasons: for a strained quadriceps (2008), hip surgery (2009), a strained calf (2010), knee surgery (2011) and a broken hand, sustained July 24 when hit by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez.

Before the start of spring training in 2009, he admitting using performance-enhancing drugs while he was with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

As for the rest of the Yankees' lineup, Derek Jeter was back at shortstop after being moved to DH for a game because of a sore left foot. Jeter led off, followed by left fielder Ichiro Suzuki, second baseman Robinson Cano, first baseman Mark Teixeira, Ibanez, right fielder Nick Swisher, center fielder Curtis Granderson, catcher Russell Martin and Chavez.

Yankees ace CC Sabathia was on the mound. He led the Yankees to a 7-2 win in the opener.

Girardi decided against benching Granderson, who is 1 for 16 (.063) with nine strikeouts in the series. He did not want to start Brett Gardner, who has been limited to three at-bats since mid-April because of an elbow injury that required surgery.

"If Grandy stays in his zone, he will be fine," Girardi said. "That's the big thing he has to concentrate on."

By Melanie Nathan, Oct 10, 2012.

Shirley Tan, Jay Mercado, Twins and Melanie Nathan at San Francisco Pride 2009

Here is the directive issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ? ICE regarding policy changes to grant latitude to determining whether or not to prosecute/ deport undocumented foreigners who are in same-sex couple permanent relationships.? This was issued by the Obama administration to thwart the extreme hardship suffered by same-sex couples who are precluded from sponsoring foreign spouses/partners for green cards.

Same-sex couples suffer severe immigration hardship as they lack immigration equality under the law.? Whereas a straight American spouses can sponsor a partner, a gay or lesbian partner, cannot, due to the implementation of the Defense of marriage Act (DOMA).? In the past year, the Obama Administration has refused to defend cases where DOMA has been challenged, asserting that it considers DOMA unconstitutional.

Immigration is covered by Federal law and so even if one can marry legally under the law of a specific State in the USA or in a foreign country where same-sex marriage is legal, spouses are still separated, exiled, or live in fear of being caught as undocumented.

This policy does not those in exile or separated, but only provides discretion to ICE if they happen to ?catch? an undocumented spouse/ partner, living in the USA, who may otherwise be subject to deportation.

This would help people like Shirley Tan who received the introduction of a Private Bill back in April 2009, thanks to the consideration and compassion she experienced from Senator Dianne Feinstein, who happened at that time to take into account all the factors mentioned by ICE in this directive.

Legislation to provide same-sex couples with immigration equality has languished for many years in various forms in the U.S. Congress, and most recently as The Yniting American families Act, with it primary champion in Congress, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Democrat from New York.

Applicability of Prosecutorial Discretion Memoranda to Certain Family Relationships

June 2011, Director Morton issued a memorandum entitled ?Exercising Prosecutorial Discretion Consistent with Civil Immigration Enforcement Priorities
of the Agency for the Apprehension, Detention, and Removal o f Aliens? (the Prosecutorial Discretion Memorandum). This and other memoranda related to
prosecutorial discretion are designed to ensure that agency resources are focused on our enforcement priorities, including individuals who pose a threat to
public safety, are recent border crossers, or repeatedly violate our immigration laws. Pursuant to the Secretary?s instruction, this new guidance serves to
clarify how the existing memoranda related to prosecutorial discretion apply to family relationships involving long-term, same-sex partners.

When considering whether to exercise prosecutorial discretion in an individual case, ICE officers, agents, and attorneys should examine the totality of
the circumstances presented by that case. As the Prosecutorial Discretion Memorandum makes clear, one of the factors relevant to that assessment is
?the person?s ties and contributions to the community, including family relationships.? The factor of ?family relationships? encompasses two adults
who are in a committed, long-term, same-sex relationship.

Same-sex relationships that rise to the level of ?family relationships? are long-term, same-sex relationships in which the individuals -

  • are each other?s sole domestic partner and intend to remain so indefinitely;
  • are not in a marital or other domestic relationship with anyone else; and
  • typically maintain a common residence and share financial obligations and assets.www.ice.gov

Thu, 11 Oct 2012 21:05:17 -0700 Jordan's king appoints new PM ahead of elections http://mucimetam.posterous.com/jordans-king-appoints-new-pm-ahead-of-electio http://mucimetam.posterous.com/jordans-king-appoints-new-pm-ahead-of-electio

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordan's King Abdullah II appointed a veteran independent politician on Wednesday as his new caretaker prime minister ahead of parliamentary elections ? the last time he will make such an appointment, according to his own reform plan.

The appointment of Abdullah Ensour is part of the king's political roadmap that addresses popular pressure for a broader role in decision-making. It paves the way for elections scheduled for the end of this year or early 2013. That parliament will choose the next prime minister.

The changes were decreed by Abdullah earlier this year to transfer more power to elected bodies and forestall any chance of an Arab Spring-style uprising similar to those that toppled regimes elsewhere in the region.

Ensour, a 73-year-old former lawmaker and deputy prime minister, is identified with the Arab nationalist trend in Jordanian politics but also has good ties with the Islamist opposition.

"Ensour's government is the last before Jordan's transition to parliamentary governments," a statement from the royal palace said.

He replaces Fayez Tarawneh, who resigned as mandated by the king's constitutional changes, which stipulate that the Cabinet must step down if parliament was dissolved. The legislature was disbanded last week, halfway through its four-year term, setting the stage for the upcoming elections.

Jordan has weathered 22 months of street protests calling for a wider public say in politics. The protests have been small compared to mass uprisings elsewhere in the region, which have led to four Arab leaders being deposed so far. The king has addressed them by giving up some of his powers, such as transferring to parliament the right to pick the prime minister.

The king however will still retain many powers, heading all three branches of government as well as the military. It is assumed that he will continue to set key policies, including foreign and security.

The next moves will see an independent electoral commission, recently formed as part of the reforms, set the date of the elections and supervise them ? responsibilities that were previously in the hands of the Cabinet.

The opposition continues to hold protests, saying that the election law favors locally-based conservative candidates rather than parties with an ideological base. The Islamists are boycotting the polls. The government says it has adopted a globally recognized system of elections, and that the Islamists' alternative would inflate their own representation.

Few opposition groups, however, question whether Jordan should remain a monarchy.

Abdullah changed 42 articles, or one-third of Jordan's 60-year-old constitution. In addition to the changes involving parliament and elections, he also created a constitutional court to monitor the application of the law.

Other moves included a political party law that encourages a multiparty system, a municipality law that allows Jordanians to govern their towns by electing mayors and city councils, a regulation lifting restrictions on rallies and public gatherings, and reforms allowing a teachers' union to be formed for the first time ever.

It was not immediately clear when Ensour would form his Cabinet, but it is expected to be within days.

Thu, 11 Oct 2012 19:10:11 -0700 Soda Makers Plan Calorie-Counting Vending Machines http://mucimetam.posterous.com/soda-makers-plan-calorie-counting-vending-mac http://mucimetam.posterous.com/soda-makers-plan-calorie-counting-vending-mac ap calorie vending machines nt 121009 wblog Bubble Trouble: Soda Makers Plan Calorie Counting Vending Machines

New calorie-aware vending machines will go public in 2013. Image credit: Coca-Cola/AP Photo.

The battle against obesity seems to have turned largely into a war on soda. All across the nation there are calls for taxes on sugar-sweetened drinks and limitations on where they can be sold. The most well-publicized salvo is New York City?s ban on large sugary drinks sold in restaurants and movie theaters and from street carts.

Beverage companies are scrambling to show they?re willing to change their ways to help avoid even more strong-arming. They?re marketing smaller drink sizes and running their own public awareness campaigns for healthy eating.

Their latest preemptive move, announced this week, literally puts the decision to guzzle a sugary drink at a consumer?s fingertips.? Soft-drink makers, including Coca-Cola and Pepsico, say they will list the calorie counts for sodas directly on the buttons of their vending machines. The new industry-designed machines go way beyond government proposals, which would only require that calorie counts be displayed on the side of a machine.

Before someone presses 240 ? the number of calories in a 20-ounce Coke ? the machine will scroll a reminder that they can always select a lower-calorie alternative. The machines, which go public in 2013, will also feature small decals with sayings such as ?Calories Count: Check Then Choose.?

David Just, the director of Cornell University?s center for behavioral economics in child nutrition programs, said he thinks the machines are a good idea and make a lot more sense than much of the anti-soda legislation. He said he?s worried that moves like the New York City ban will backfire.

?If we do something that specifically targets soda and we don?t know that it will have a huge impact on obesity, we are taking a big risk that it will be ineffective while creating a lot of resentment from consumers and retailers. If we tick off both sides in this transaction, it will be a lot more difficult to introduce new legislation in the future,? said Just.

Just said he thought it makes more sense to get beverage companies to make voluntary changes like the calorie-aware vending machines. He thinks there are other things they can do too.

?Rather than doing a hard sell on sugary drinks to kids and teens, beverage companies could market artificially sweetened and low calorie beverages to them instead,? he said.

Just said this has never been done on a large scale before and his group at Cornell has shown it could significantly lower the consumption of sugary drinks while raising the sales of healthier beverages.

?These companies aren?t selling sugar, they?re selling soda. They don?t care if their products contain sugar or not, so this type of change could be a win for everyone,? Just said.

Yale University?s Kelly Brownell can be pardoned for not believing beverage company tactics alone will help lower soda consumption and lower obesity rates. Brownell has led the charge to legislate sugar-laden beverages for more than a decade.

?In this country, we start by hoping people will change their behavior on their own. If the default approach of imploring people to change their ways doesn?t work, then we ask the government to step in and take action,? he said.

To Brownell, regulating soda is public health policy 101 ? and it has plenty of precedents. He points to smoking, seat belts and immunization as examples where there was a lot of opposition to regulation at first, but the objections soon receded.

In order to address the obesity crisis, Brownell said he believes we have to start regulating somewhere, and the evidence for the dietary evils of soda is so strong that it makes sense to start there.

Truly no one can stand up for soda on nutritional grounds no matter which side of the debate they are on. The consumer group Center for Science in the Public Interest says that the average American drinks more than 40 ounces of sweetened drinks daily, with groups like teenage boys averaging double that amount. Sugary drinks are now the single greatest source of added sugar in the American diet ? and they offer no nutritional value.

A trio of studies in a recent issue of The New England Journal of Medicine found that sugar-sweetened beverages make a unique contribution to our expanding waistlines. One investigation was a decades-long study of more than 33,000 Americans, which showed sugary beverages interact with genes that affect weight, magnifying weight gain in people who are predisposed by heredity to piling on the pounds. The two other experiments found that giving children and teens calorie-free alternatives to the sugary drinks leads to less weight gain over time.

Dr. Lu Qi, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, said he thinks a combination of public policy and industry changes are needed. Most important, he said, people must understand how serious a health crisis soda consumption has become.

?However we do it, the more solid evidence we have, the easier it will be to convince people to give up sugar-sweetened beverages,? he said.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? President Barack Obama's counterterrorism chief has discussed last month's killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya with the country's leaders.

John Brennan is in Tripoli as part of the investigation into the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi last month, where Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed along with three other Americans. Brennan met Wednesday with interim President Mohammed el-Megarif and Foreign Minister Ashour bin Khayal.

Omar Humidan, spokesman for Libya's General National Council, said all agreed the investigation should be secret.

The U.S. has blamed militants linked to al-Qaida for the consulate attack. It erupted as Muslims protested a film that insulted Islam's Prophet Muhammad. The U.S. declared later that militants linked to the international terror network were involved.

Obama's Republican opponents have criticized his handling of the affair.

Wed, 10 Oct 2012 22:05:22 -0700 LED Roundup: Redwood Systems, Lumenergi, IKEA, and the GSA ... http://mucimetam.posterous.com/led-roundup-redwood-systems-lumenergi-ikea-an http://mucimetam.posterous.com/led-roundup-redwood-systems-lumenergi-ikea-an

The federal government?s a key buyer of energy efficient solid-state lighting, and so are the big box stores.

Swedish housewares giant Ikea made waves last week with its announcement that it will phase out all incandescent and fluorescent lights on its shelves by 2016 to go LED-only. It?s the latest in a series of challenges that major retailers (think Ikea, Home Depot, Lowe?s, Best Buy, etc.) and their lighting technology suppliers (GE, Philips, Osram, etc.) have set for themselves on LEDs, which have been poised to take over the commercial and industrial lighting sectors for years now.

With LED prices falling pretty dramatically, it?s a good bet that big-box stores like Ikea will also be slashing the prices on their consumer LED bulbs, which are still pricey compared to their CFL counterparts. That, in turn, is driving investment across the LED technology chain, from advanced power management and thermal components to integrating LEDs with household dimmer switches and office smart-lighting controls. Customers will want their new $20 (or even $5) LED bulbs to work as promised, after all.

In the meantime, the U.S. government is one of the biggest buyers of LED products in the world as part of its broader, multi-billion-dollar push for energy efficiency. The Department of Energy says solid-state lighting (SSL) could cut the U.S. lighting bill in half, and it is investing tax dollars into R&D and business adoption programs to push it into the mainstream.

The General Services Administration (GSA) manages the country?s federal properties, which makes it a good partner for LED companies. Last week, the GSA gave a nod to lighting control networking startup Lumenergi, announcing it had turned down energy consumption at 11 buildings by a whopping 63 percent.?

That?s a pretty big number, though rival ?smart lighting? companies like Adura, Daintree Networks, Digital Lumens, Enlighted and others say they can also achieve those kinds of savings in buildings that are egregious light-wasters. Simply turning off the lights you used to leave on all night can cut your bill in half, though few buildings are that wasteful. More typical energy savings are in the 20 percent to 30 percent range, out of a lighting budget that?s roughly one-quarter of a building?s total load.

Lumenergi, which raised a $12.7 million Series B round in 2010, also got a nod from the GSA?s Pacific Rim regional administrator, Ruth Cox, who said the platform was useful in identifying where efficiency investment made the most sense. That?s a big new trend in the industry, with startups like FirstFuel and Retroficiency promising hands-off data analytics that can pick out key buildings and classes of real estate to target for the biggest and fastest paybacks. Simple ?burnout? sensors that can direct maintenance workers to faulty lights, while avoiding rote replacement of still-useful bulbs and tubes, can also save a bundle.

In the meantime, once you?ve got a network deployed in your building to manage lights, why not do other things with it? On Monday, Redwood Systems, a startup that networks LEDs and other lighting systems, said that by year?s end it would deliver a ?Room Tracker? tool to manage conference rooms, all running over the same network and control platform that it uses to manage the lights.

Once again, this is a common theme in the smart lighting space. Lights are ubiquitous in buildings, making them great places to locate wireless nodes as well. Those can support all kinds of sensor data collection and control platforms, as well as integrate into master building management systems and the like. Just how all these tools will integrate and partner with building controls giants like Siemens, GE, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Johnson Controls and the like remains to be seen, of course.

Wireless controls are growing in the industrial realm, with some acquisition activity along the way. Dust Networks, which makes low-power wireless networks using the WirelessHART standard, was acquired by Linear Technology in December.

In the meantime, the residential market remains limited to wealthy early adopters. Google says its Android@Home platform will include IPv6-compatible wireless networking based on the 6LoWPAN standard, though so far it?s only announced one partner, LED maker Lighting Science.
