from age15 to age 90 is breast cancer

Answer by lo_mcg
80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50.

Approximately 5% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are under 40.

It?s almost unheard of in under 25s.

Although men can get it too, fewer than 1% of people diagnosed with breast cancer are male; most men diagnosed with breast cancer are over 65.

Only 5 ? 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary/genetic; the rest are random and nobody knows what causes them

As usual lo_mcg answer is very good. However, you should know your question itself is flawed, as breast cancer does not most often occur between two specific ages it only increases with time. 75% are diagnosed in postmenopausal women and obviously that age is different for every woman. The risk for breast cancer is 1 in 19,600 at 25 years old, 1 in 33 at 55 years old, 1 in 11 at 75 years old and 1 in 8 in women 80 years old and over.

Women who completed their first full term pregnancy after the age of 30 are 2-5 times more likely to get breast cancer than those who had done so before the age of 18. We also know women who started having their period before the age of 12 and women who were menopausal after 55 are at an increased risk for breast cancer.

These things make it easy to see that there is a link between breast cancer and hormones. However, there are other things that are still unexplained. We know about the BRCA 1 and 2 gene mutations, which is an increased risk for breast cancer and it is not common to have, but 25% of Jewish women with breast cancer have this gene mutation. The incidence of breast cancer is highest among women is a higher socioeconomic background. Although the incidence is higher in white women, black women are more likely to die from the disease and they also have a higher incidence of Her2 over expression. Hispanic and Asian women have half the incidence rate of breast cancer as white women.

We keep track of all this information even if we do not yet understand the cause. It helps us to learn so that maybe one day soon we will.
