Skyscraper-sized asteroid set to buzz Earth

A 400-metre-wide asteroid is about to buzz Earth at less than the distance of the moon, closer than any rock its size has come in 35 years. Astronomers are aiming every instrument they've got at the rock, and radar observations have already shed new light on its shape.

Racing towards us at 13 kilometres per second, the asteroid 2005 YU55 will come within 325,000 kilometres of Earth ? 85 per cent of the way to the moon ? at 2328 GMT on Tuesday.

In the last few days, the space rock has come close enough for the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California to bounce radio waves off the rock and record their return (see image).

The new measurements have revealed that the rock is elongated rather than spherical, says Jon Giorgini at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. But the initial measurements could not capture all sides of the asteroid, which appears to rotate once every 18 hours. "A full shape will come after some days of watching it spin," he says.

The Goldstone data confirmed earlier calculations that the asteroid is not due to collide with Earth ? at least for the next 100 years. As the beast approaches, additional measurements of the speed and direction of its spin and thermal properties "should allow us to push predictions further", possibly into centuries, says Giorgini. "The dinosaurs had only about 25 seconds of warning due to a lack of interest in math and physics; we can do better."

Charles Lineweaver at the Australian National University in Canberra says long-term predictions of asteroid paths are the key to saving our planet from a collision. With enough time, we could send a spacecraft to fly alongside an asteroid headed for Earth, and "pull it off course using the ship's gravitational pull", he says.

The asteroid may also shed light on how Earth became friendly to life. Radar observations made with the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico in 2010 showed that its surface is darker than charcoal, suggesting it is a carbon-rich C-type asteroid. Such asteroids may have delivered water to Earth, says Lineweaver.

MTV's 'regrettably uninformative' True Life: I'm Occupying Wall Street (The Week)

New York ? Did MTV capture the freewheeling spirit of the youthful protesters it followed, or just make them look like twerps?

On Saturday, MTV aired a special episode of its True Life documentary series?that examined what it's like to be one of the young Occupy Wall Street protesters at New York City's Zuccotti Park. The youth-oriented cable TV network focused on two individuals: Bryan, a 23-year-old full-time protester from Massachusetts who's also a dedicated member of the sanitation squad; and Kait, a 20-year-old student who protests by day and returns to her university dorm room at night. Did MTV successfully shed light on the movement?

No. MTV blew it: True Life "was regrettably uninformative," says Emily Cheever at Ology. Instead of letting Bryan express his political views, the show made it seem as if he's "too busy cleaning up after dirty hippies" to even ponder why he's there. And the show completely ignored the point-of-view of the police officers assigned to keep the peace and prevent the demonstrations from getting out of control. Some documentary.
"TV Review: True Life?: I'm Occupying Wall Street"

If you think Occupy is a joke, you'll love this: MTV portrayed the movement "as summer camp with protest signs, a rolling festival of exasperation and na?vet?," says Mike Hale at The New York Times. It's easy to imagine viewers rolling their eyes when Kait says it's "empowering" to yell at bank buildings. Instead of producing something "sympathetic to young people's feelings," MTV confirmed the suspicions of old cranks who think Occupy Wall Street is a juvenile circus.
"Wall Street protests, person by person"

This failure says more about MTV than Occupy: "MTV is eager to cover Occupy Wall Street; it just doesn't know how," says Stephen Deusner at Salon. Back in the heyday of Rock the Vote and Choose or Lose, MTV at least appeared to have a conscience. But now it seems "clueless" about what motivates young protesters, and seems content to just exploit them. "How long before we see JWoww and The Situation carrying picket signs?"
"MTV blows its street cred"

Frank Ocean Cancels NYC Show After Promising New Orleans Debut

MTV's RapFix hit Odd Future crooner's NOLA concert a day before he canceled NYC date via Tumblr.

Frank Ocean, Odd Future's much-buzzed-about crooner, seemed to be just getting started when he suddenly canceled his scheduled Sunday show in New York just one hour before his set time citing illness. The jaunt was interrupted only a day after Ocean played the first date on a mini-tour that kicked off in his native New Orleans on Saturday.

Back in February, Ocean independently released Nostalgia, Ultra via Tumblr, and since then the popular mixtape has been pegged for re-release on Def Jam, thanks to the hit singles "Swim Good" and "Novacane," which both made their way from the Internet to the radio. In early October, the 24-year-old singer/songwriter announced plans to embark on an intimate six-city tour in support of the mixtape.

The Odd Future member kicked off his short-lived run with a solo show in his hometown of New Orleans on Saturday night, but after performing soundcheck at the Bowery Ballroom the following day, he canceled the show.

While some fans were already lined up outside of the venue, Ocean retreated to Tumblr to pen a new post titled "New York Is Cancelled."

"Or should i say postponed," Ocean wrote. "I played last night in new orleans, on antibiotics and some other meds. got sick a cpl days before i left los angeles. woke up this morning in new york and could barely speak. called a doctor to my hotel, got a steroid shot. took some more meds. laid in bed all day till soundcheck, got to the venue and could barely sing any of my songs. im really sorry yall. i been workin on this show for months, did everything i could to make it special for yall. i'll be back soon as i'm healthy. thats my word. tickets will be valid for that, or you guys can get refunded. damn this sh--."

During his New Orleans show on Saturday night, it took the shy performer some time to warm up to the crowd. He delivered several tracks from Nostalgia, Ultra, including "Lovecrimes," "Swim Good" and "Novacane," while slipping in some material from his upcoming album. Ocean also performed the hooks from his Watch the Throne features "No Church in the Wild" and "Made in America."

Before the cancellation, the tour was expected to stop in the Netherlands, London and Paris before concluding in Los Angeles on November 15; no word yet on whether those shows will go on.

UN has been ratcheting up Iran sanctions (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The U.N. Security Council first imposed sanctions against Iran in December 2006 and has been ratcheting up the punitive measures since then in hopes of pressuring the government to suspend enrichment and start negotiations on its nuclear program ? which it has refused to do.

The council has acted in response to reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is expected to release new details this week indicating possible secret work by Iran to develop nuclear weapons. It could lead to new sanctions.

Here is a rundown of the four sanctions resolutions adopted thus far:

? December 2006: The council ordered all countries to stop supplying Iran with materials and technology that could contribute to its nuclear and missile programs. It also ordered countries to freeze the assets of 10 key Iranian companies and 12 individuals related to those programs.

? March 2007: The council banned Iranian arms exports and ordered countries to freeze the assets of 28 additional individuals and organizations involved in Iran's nuclear and missile programs. It called for voluntary restrictions on travel by the individuals subject to sanctions, on arms sales to Iran, and on new financial assistance or loans to the Iranian government.

? March 2008: The council banned all countries from trading with Iran in goods that have both civilian and military uses. It authorized inspection of cargo suspected of containing banned items on planes and ships that are owned or operated by Iran Air Cargo and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line. It authorized financial monitoring of Bank Melli and Bank Saderat, called on all countries "to exercise vigilance" in entering into new trade commitments, and froze the assets of 12 additional companies and 13 individuals.

? June 2010: The council banned Iran from pursuing "any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons," barred Iranian investment in activities such as uranium mining, and prohibited Iran from buying several categories of heavy weapons. It called on all countries to cooperate in the inspection of suspect cargo and to block financial transactions and ban the licensing of Iranian banks if they have "reasonable grounds" to believe these activities could contribute to Iranian nuclear activities.

The council also imposed sanctions on 40 Iranian companies and organizations. It added one individual to the previous list of 40 Iranians subject to an asset freeze and banned travel for all of them.

Oil exports, the lifeblood of Iran's economy, are not affected by sanctions because of opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power on council decisions.

Obama takes firm stance on net neutrality (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (TheWrap.com) ? President Obama will not be neutral when it comes to net neutrality.

The White House on Tuesday pledged to veto any Congressional resolution seeking to overturn the Federal Communication Commission's Open Internet regulations, set to go into effect November 20.

The presidential shot across the bow comes prior to an expected Thursday Senate vote on Republican-sponsored "resolution of disapproval" opposing the regulations.

Unveiled last September, the rules are designed to prevent Internet service providers from discriminating against competitors or consumers by blocking content or altering speeds.

The regulations allow the FCC to impose fines and bring injunctions against companies that slow down Internet service for customers who are streaming movies or downloading music.

The Republican-majority House of Representatives passed a similar resolution in April.

Though Democrats maintain a 53-47 majority in the Senate, Thursday's vote is expected to be close, due to the rules that apply to resolutions.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Republican from Texas, mustered the signatures needed to get the resolution, officially "S.J. Res. 6," discharged from the Senate Commerce Committee. It is now before the entire Senate. That means filibuster rules will not apply and the resolution can be passed with a simple majority meaning only 51 votes are required for approval.

The resolution currently has 42 Republican co-sponsors. But according to Joel Kelsey, political advisor for Free Press, it is not clear how Republican senators Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Jerry Moran of Kansas will vote. There are similar questions about Democrats Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Last week Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts sent a letter to his fellow senators imploring them to vote against the resolution.

The Congressional Review Act provides a mechanism for Congress to overturn federal agency regulations it disapproves of. It requires passage in both houses, then the signature of the president.
