UFC 142 picks, Vegas-style: Bettors pounding Vitor Belfort

The debate has raged all day - how will Anthony Johnson's weight snafu affect his fight against Vitor Belfort? The pulse in the betting world is that Johnson is in big trouble at UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro.

[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]

Belfort's number has jumped 40 cents since it was announced Johnson couldn't make the 186-pound weight limit at middleweight. He actually stepped on the scales yesterday in Rio de Janeiro at 197 pounds. A stipulation was also put in place that Johnson couldn't replenish his body beyond 205 pounds for another weigh-in earlier today.

If you liked Aldo early in the week at minus-220, you missed your chance. There's been heavy fight day steam on Aldo pushing him to minus-275.

Listen to Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole, Adam Hill from the Las Vegas-Review Journal give out picks for the top fights on the card during last night's "MMA Insiders" show on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas.

18 percent of blacks, 4 percent of whites report emotional, physical distress due to discriminatory treatment

Racial discrimination may be harmful to your health, according to new research from Rice University sociologists Jenifer Bratter and Bridget Gorman.

In the study, "Is Discrimination an Equal Opportunity Risk? Racial Experiences, Socio-economic Status and Health Status Among Black and White Adults," the authors examined data containing measures of social class, race and perceived discriminatory behavior and found that approximately 18 percent of blacks and 4 percent of whites reported higher levels of emotional upset and/or physical symptoms due to race-based treatment.

"Discriminatory behavior very well may be a 'missing link' in the analysis of racial and ethnic health disparities," Bratter said. "It's important to acknowledge and study its impact on long-term health.

Unlike most of the research on this topic, Bratter and Gorman's study examines the health risks of discrimination among both whites and blacks, as opposed to just blacks. Their analysis was based on data from the 2004 wave of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, an ongoing collaborative project between U.S. states and territories and the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"This racially comparative focus is important because we examine whether discrimination is equally harmful to the health status of black and white adults or whether experiencing discrimination is disproportionately harmful to either black or white adults," Gorman said. "For example, since, on average, black adults typically experience more health risks in their social and personal environment than white adults (including higher poverty and lower-quality medical insurance), they may be especially vulnerable to negative health effects as a result of racial discrimination."

A greater number of blacks report poor health due to discrimination, and the study did find that black-white disparities in health are shaped in part by the differential exposure of blacks to the harmful effects of discrimination. However, Bratter and Gorman also show that while perceiving discrimination exacerbates some of the economic-based health risks more typically experienced by black adults, patterns differ for white adults. Regardless of social-class position, white adults who perceive unfair treatment relative to other racial groups in either workplace or health care settings report poorer health.

"A relatively small proportion of white adults report unfair treatment that is race-based, but those who do say their health status is harmed more than blacks who report the same experiences," Gorman said.

Both Bratter and Gorman hope that their research will raise awareness about the impact racial discrimination has on health and wellness.

"Ultimately we hope that practitioners and researchers in the medical field recognize the dual contribution of social class and interpersonal treatment in shaping health outcomes among persons of all racial populations," Bratter said.

This study appeared in the September 2011 edition of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior and was funded by Rice University.

Politicians Are People Too (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | With Mitt Romney winning the New Hampshire primary and Ron Paul coming in second, we can feel the waves of change; and it's more change than Barack Obama mustered with his "hope and change" platform of 2008. For one, the candidates aren't attacking each other during the debates unless heavily prompted; and for another, Ron Paul is being taken seriously.

I can't see Paul as president, but he earned my respect when he stated, "I think they're unfairly attacking him on that issue because he never really literally said that. They've taken him way out of context. ? He wants to fire companies," as reported by ABC News. Paul's statement was in reference to the attacks Romney has suffered due to his "I like to fire people," statement.

As a former retail assistant manager, I can tell you that firing people is not fun and no manager enjoys firing people. As a manager, when I fire someone, I know I'm taking away their livelihood. I am taking away their self-esteem, and I am ruining their day. It weighs heavily on me, and I can't imagine that Romney feels any differently when he has to fire individuals. Firing someone is the worst part of being a manager. Every time I have ever had to fire someone, I have felt like a failure. I always wonder if there was something else I could have done that would have produced a different outcome.

Therefore, I am in agreement with Paul. Romney was taken out of context. Romney was talking about firing companies, and we can all relate to that. Bank of America made a huge mistake when they tried to initiate a $5 debit card fee, and as a result, many individuals fired Bank of America and chose another bank.

When Netflix tried to separate its DVD by mail services, and its streaming services while increasing the rates to $16, many people fired Netflix as their movie rental service. That's what Romney was talking about. When a company no longer works for you or another company, it should be fired. That's what makes this country great. We have options. If we don't like our bank, we can choose a new bank. If we don't like our cable company, we can choose a new cable company. It's that simple, and when we make those switches, we are firing the old company.

Romney's verbal gaffe also means he's human. There were better ways to state what he said, but he was speaking off the cuff. When Paul said what he said, he was speaking off the cuff. They were telling us how they felt, and we need to see more of that during the primaries and during the 2012 election. We don't just need rhetoric and agendas. We need to know how the candidates feel and what they think, and I think we'll get more of that during the subsequent debates and primaries.

EDM Rookies To Watch In 2012

R3hab, Nicky Romero, Hardwell and Alesso are a few of the electronic dance music upstarts blazing into the new year.
By Adam Stewart and Akshay Bhansali

Alesso
Photo: Drew Ressley

After a mesmerizing year for electronic dance music, it almost goes without saying that the genre will continue to blaze a trail Stateside in 2012. Acts from Skrillex to Kaskade enjoyed crossover success in 2011, and now fans are hungry for more new releases, killer albums and massive festivals.

But while it may be clear who's leading the charge, there are more than a few EDM upstarts who've been making noise, and if one thing is for certain, it's that they'll be shaping the musical landscape in the months to come. In MTV News' Rookie Roll Call, we break down exactly which acts (some greener than others) we've got our eye on as the dance scene gets locked and loaded for another killer year.

Alesso
Groomed by Sebastian Ingrosso, Alesso was without a doubt one of 2011's hottest new names. Now, with no fewer than six hit releases and remixes under his belt, the young Swede has all of the necessary weapons to crush it in 2012.

Arty
Expect big things from U.K. label Anjunabeats' young Russian phenom. Arty burst onto the scene with hits "Around the World" and "Kate," as well as killer collabs with Mat Zo and Matisse & Sadko. 2012 promises to be a marquee year.

Deniz Koyu
A blazing new talent, Deniz Koyu shocked the scene last year with numbers like "Tung!" and a collabo with Johan Wedel on a remix of James Blunt's "Dangerous." Koyu kicks off 2012 with a "tri-laboration" that roped in Fedde le Grand and Wedel on the track "New Day," and he's set to keep heating things up.

Hardwell
The 23-year-old DJ/producer has been tickling the decks since the age of 13, and 2011 proved to be his breakout year. Hardwell smashed it early on in '11 with Tiësto on the megahit "Zero 76," but he also knocked out solo cuts "Cobra (Official Energy Anthem 2012)" and "Encoded." He's one of the hottest talents in the game, and certainly worth tagging as one to watch in 2012.

Knife Party
Under their dubstep-inspired production moniker Knife Party, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen of Pendulum hit big on the Swedish House Mafia collabo "Antidote." And although Knife Party are just getting started, their stellar re-warbles for Porter Robinson and Nero, and original current hits like "Internet Friends" and "Firehive," prove there's much more in store from the Aussie duo.

Nicky Romero
With David Guetta and Fedde Le Grand in his corner, Nicky Romero had a DJ set staple early in '11 with his remix of Green Velvet's "Flash." Romero also hit home runs with solo singles "Camorra" and "Toulouse." Fans can expect a banger or two to drop this year with assists from Monsieur Guetta.

R3hab
A member of the Afrojack camp, Dutch newbie R3hab chain-sawed killer re-works for Rihanna and Katy Perry. He also put his special touch on Sander van Doorn's "Koko." And R3hab's monster pairings with Swanky Tunes and Max C on "Sending My Love," and with Afrojack on "Prutataaa," support our conviction that he's got a huge year to come on his hands.

Tommy Trash
After years of cranking out grimey, loopy, textured material, Tommy Trash took everyone by surprise in '11 with original heaters like "Future Folk" and "The End," capping off the year with a fourth-quarter remix bomb of John Dahlback's "One Last Ride."

Zedd
With tunes like "Shave It" and a collab credit on "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites," not to mention his remix of SHM's "Save the World," Zedd's production foundation is rock solid. And you know what else is cool? He's edgy enough to totally reinvent a song like Edvaard Grieg's classical composition "In the Hall of the Mountain King" — or "Doveregubben," the theme to video game "Zelda" — and make it work in the club! For Zedd, things are looking good in 2012.

Sound off on MTV News' 2012 EDM Rookie Roll Call on our Facebook page!

Lenovo to make 55-inch, Android 4.0 TV

Lenovo

By Suzanne Choney

PC maker Lenovo is getting into the television business, planning a 55-inch "smart TV" that will use Android's 4.0 operating system to unite three functions: Video On Demand, Internet apps and traditional TV programs.

With that news ? shared in Las Vegas, ahead of the start of the Consumer Electronics Show ? the company is pulling a reverse Vizio: the budget TV brand just announced it's going to make computers. Lenovo recently passed Dell to become the world's No. 2 PC maker, behind HP.

The TV ? with the rather inartful name of the "K91" (right now, anyway)?? will use Qualcomm's 8060 Snapdragon dual-core CPU, and the newest version of Android, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. A built-in 5-megapixel webcam will integrate face recognition technology for "security benefits and advanced parental control," Lenovo said.

There's no word on when the TV will be out, or what it will cost.

But who knows ? maybe you'll have a Vizio laptop and a Lenovo TV at some point, instead of the other way around.

Romney defends 'fire people' comment (AP)

MANCHESTER, N.H. ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday defended his "I like to fire people" remark against criticism from GOP rivals as he and his family faced a crush of reporters, supporters and detractors on New Hampshire's primary day.

"I was talking about as you know insurance companies," Romney said as he fought through the crowd with his wife, Ann, and son Craig. "We all like to get rid of our insurance companies."

Romney's campaign was also defending the White House hopeful from his GOP foes' continued attacks on his business record at venture capital investment company Bain Capital.

Taken together, the assault has left Romney's team tense going into a night they hoped would be a celebration of an overwhelming victory that would contribute to the perception that the former Massachusetts governor would inevitably become the Republican nominee.

Instead, when Romney reached out to hold a supporter's baby daughter, the shouts were angry. "Are you going to fire the baby?" someone yelled over the din.

Others shouted, "We want Mitt!"

Romney's staffers tried to guide him through the crush of reporters shouting questions at him and had to shove people out of the way to open the door of Romney's SUV. His daughter-in-law was left behind in the crowd, and Romney moved a meeting with volunteers to a different, unannounced location.

He had no other public events planned until Tuesday evening.

Romney has led in opinion polls here for months ? in recent days by 20 percentage points or more. He's been pushing for an overwhelming victory as he looks to South Carolina, a state where the conservative GOP base was uncomfortable with him in 2008, and strives to wrap up the nomination fight as quickly as possible.

His campaign aides had been most concerned about complacency among supporters, and they launched an intensive get-out-the-vote effort over the weekend, backed by hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of phone calls.

Romney and his rivals are in many ways already looking to the first-in-the-South contest a little more than a week from now. Gingrich allies are spending millions to run ads attacking Romney's time heading Bain Capital.

And rival Rick Perry, in South Carolina on Tuesday, said companies like Bain are "vultures" that "swoop in and eat the carcass" of struggling companies.
