Colombia rebels selling cows as drug money drops: Santos (Reuters)

BOGOTA (Reuters) ? Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said on Monday the country's largest rebel group was increasingly selling its cattle to finance South America's longest-running insurgency as income from trafficking cocaine drops.

Colombia's Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, has been reeling from more than a decade of a U.S.-backed military offensive that has dealt it major blows and cut cocaine output in one of the world's top producers of the drug.

"The FARC is designing a complete strategy to counter the problem of lack of financing ... due to the blows to their funding sources, especially drug trafficking. One of the orders was to sell cattle to get more resources," Santos said.

The FARC has been trying in recent weeks to sell cattle stolen in other regions of the country, Santos said in a speech in the southern province of Caqueta.

The rebels have for decades funded their movement through control of coca production and have built up ties with drug gangs in some parts of the country and fought for control over key routes and supplies in others.

The billions of dollars a year in cocaine money has been one of the main reasons why Colombia's war has continued for nearly five decades and its political system has been rocked by scandals of collusion between officials and gangs.

Santos is responsible for some of the harshest blows against the FARC - first as defense minister and then as president - including killing the group's leader Alfonso Cano in November.

Strikes against the FARC since 2002 have severely weakened the rebels' ability to launch attacks on the country's economic infrastructure, while better security has helped attract billions of dollars in foreign investment.

Colombia's steps to improve security, however, mask deep-seated issues like unequal land distribution, rural poverty, flourishing criminal gangs and weak institutions.

Santos has pushed through a range of reforms to tackle structural economic defects that prompt support for the FARC such as returning land stolen by right-wing paramilitaries and rebels to displaced peasants.

Despite being at its weakest in years, the FARC still carry out ambushes and bombings.

On Friday, rebels were suspected by police of detonating a car bomb in Catatumbo in Norte de Santander province, which is along the border with Venezuela in an area where new FARC chief Timoleon Jimenez or "Timochenko" is believed to be operating.

Both guerrillas and the government have called for peace but Santos says the Marxist rebels must first take steps they want peace, such as releasing hostages and stopping attacks. The FARC has refused to disarm.

Various peace efforts in Colombia since the 1980s have brought mixed success, with some smaller illegal armed groups demobilizing, but the FARC has pressed on.

"The government does not have any indication nor demonstration at this time that can convince us of the good will of the other party in reaching a peace agreement," Santos said.

"Action by the security forces will be strong and remain strong."

(AP) ? For a team that's bringing back its orange uniforms in 2012, the Denver Broncos were resoundingly blue on Sunday.

While some players were buoyed by their bounce-back season under Tim Tebow, most were still bummed over their 45-10 pummeling Saturday night at the hands of the New England Patriots.

"Everybody wants to say we should pat ourselves on the back, but to heck with that. We lost," Champ Bailey said.

Crashing the playoff party for the first time in six seasons and beating Pittsburgh in the first round just wasn't enough.

"People think we should walk around here with a smile on our face because we made the playoffs, we won a game. We came up short again," Bailey said. "For me personally, I don't have a lot of time here. I don't know how much longer I'll play. It's one of those things, every year you miss it and you don't win it and here we go again, we've got to start all over again."

Among the biggest questions facing the Broncos this offseason is whether Tebow did enough to stay the starting quarterback and force the front office to look at other needs in the draft and free agency.

Football chief John Elway said last month that he'll work with his raw lefty to polish his passing game during the offseason, something he couldn't really do during the NFL lockout last year.

Elway, coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders will meet with the media Monday.

Tebow wasn't among the Broncos in the locker room during a one-hour media window Sunday, emerging from the trainers' room with a smile as the session ended and the players filed out for their final team meeting.

Tebow went 8-5 as the starter but lost four of his last five games, piling up some stinkers to go with his stellar starts that included a series of fourth-quarter comebacks and triumphs in overtime.

The Broncos (9-9) got a late start on their comeback season with Kyle Orton getting almost all the snaps with the starters in training camp before caving in to Tebowmania and losing his starting job when Denver stumbled to a 1-4 start.

Tebow is the presumptive incumbent barring a big offseason move.

"I think the guy has a good shot to be a good quarterback in this league," Bailey said.

When asked if he felt Tebow had sowed his starting status, however, Bailey said everyone has to prove himself all over.

"I think we all do. You can't just look at him and think he's the only one fighting for his position," Bailey said. "Every year we've got to prove ourselves. I know he's going to work hard at it, just like every guy in this locker room. So, I'm looking forward to seeing the kind of product we have on the field next year."

Wide receiver Eric Decker concurred, saying: "No one's ever guaranteed a spot. I think Tim's done a great job to earn respect and definitely have that role for next year. But competition drives greatness. I think going into next year at each position, I don't know if anyone's guaranteed anything."

Nonetheless, Decker's money is on Tebow.

"Just knowing the person he is and the work ethic that he has he's going to be hard to beat out," said Decker, who pledged to work with his quarterback this offseason to help make the passing game less clunky.

Tebow's string of stirring comebacks and 80-yard touchdown strike to Demaryius Thomas that beat the Steelers on the first play of overtime in the wild-card round gave the Broncos hope for 2012.

"Everybody doubted us, saying that we were only going to win two or three games," Thomas said. "We won eight games and made it to the playoffs. When we were down 1-4, we still had doubters and we came out and worked everything and got better as we went."

Thomas emerged as one of the league's top deep threats over the last two months after overcoming a series of injuries, including a torn Achilles and fractured finger.

A full offseason with Tebow will make a big difference for this offense, tight end Daniel Fells said.

"Not to use the lockout as an excuse, but when you have a younger team and a quarterback it is harder to gel without all that time and training camp is definitely a good time for you to get that rhythm," Fells said.

The Broncos, who finished a franchise-worst 4-12 last year, went from the second overall pick in the draft to the second-round of the playoffs in Fox's first year as coach and Tebow's first as the starting QB.

"Well, it's definitely a better feeling in this locker room after the season than last year, just because we know we're headed in the right direction," Bailey said. "Now, we've just got to build off that. We've got a lot of work to do. Obviously, yesterday showed that we're not near to being one of the top teams in the league right now."

Linebacker Joe Mays said the culture of losing stopped when Fox replaced Josh McDaniels as coach.

"He just said, 'We're going to be a good football team this year and we're going to turn some heads and right some wrongs, we're going to show that we can go out there and play football with the best of them,'" Mays recounted. "And I think that we did a good job of that. We had our ups and downs, but overall I think we're going to be a good football team for years to come."

Notes: Decker said the hit from James Harrison that left him with a sprained left knee was legal: "I think it was unfortunate now with the new rules, guys are scared to hit high, especially Harrison, being fined so much. He had to go low," Decker said. "It stinks. I'd rather get hit high, to be honest with you, because as a receiver, my legs are my investment. But at the same time I'm not upset or mad at what he did." ... Bailey, for one, expects SS Brian Dawkins to recover from a neck injury and return for a 17th season "just because I know he doesn't want to end like this."

The TV Business Keeps Getting Stronger ! ? blog maverick

Back in my broadcast.com days we had a saying that ?bits are bits?. ?That once content becomes digital, it is naturally going to become available on any and all digital devices. Based on this, we always made the point to be platform and device agnostic. We didn?t care where or how people saw our content, as long as they saw it and we had the chance to monetize it.

We also knew that our core value proposition to consumers was that on broadcast.com they were able to get content that they couldn?t get on TV. We had Yoga channels, we had cricket live and on demand, we had sports , music, movies, tv, comedy and anything else you could think of available. We had a policy that we never tried to create hits. That we were always going to go wide and create a reason for people to start watching video online. ?17 years later. Yep, its been 17 years since we started Broadcast.com (as audionet.com first), Youtube and others are still doing the exact same thing.

Good for them ! Except they are making one huge fundamental mistake, they are trying to create hits. They don?t like the idea that beyond a steady stream of 1 hit wonders they haven?t been able to create a sustainable roadmap to content success. In other words, they have no idea how to drive an audience to specific content. Their hits come out of nowhere. (Im excluding music since that has become the domain of VEVO).

TV doesn?t have that problem. TV has a fundamentally different problem. But before we go there, lets talk about the big lie that the internet video folks like to tell in order to pump their products.

The Big Lie = Online video views is the same as number of TV viewers.

1mm views of an online video is not ?the same as 1mm viewers of a tv show. Nope. Not true. First, we all know that an online view is not a unique viewer. But lets get beyond that. When you look at USA Today and see number of viewers of a tv show, that is the AVERAGE NUMBER OF VIEWERS that watch the show. So when it says that SharkTank on ABC had 4mm viewers for a showing on Friday night (btw, SharkTank returns Jan 20th at 8pm EST !). That means on average 4mm people were watching. If you were to look at the total number of households for that showing, it would probably be 8mm or more. In addition, we all know that by definition a household has a minimum of 1 viewer, but it can be higher, so if you want to compare apples to apples with an online video , the starting point has to be Households that watched multiplied by the average number of viewers per household .

But wait , there is more ! The views of a video on Youtube includes all the showings over an extended period of time. The ratings for SharkTank or any tv show all happened during the 1 hour the show was on the air. Which is exactly why TV is still a much more valuable advertising medium. Would you rather have your ad seen by the audience all within one hour, or over some unknown extended period ? Who knows how long it will take for your online video to reach 8mm unique viewers ? It will certainly be more than 1 hour. That is an advantage that TV has and will not lose for the forseeable future. No matter what happens with wired TVs or mobile devices TV gives you an audience right now. (And yes we could take this further by including DVR usage as well)

So lets get back to traditional ?TV. Big media is not as stupid as they used to be. Nor are they as stupid as the internet video proponents want them to be. At CES this past week it was popular to hear about the explosion of online content and how people were going to be watching it on TV now that the new TVs have internet connectivity to all the great providers from Boxee, Netflix, Amazon , etc. ?These ?content distribution companies are not competitors to TV as a lot of folks would like you to believe, they are CUSTOMERS of TV show producers. ?They don?t hurt the TV business, they have made the TV business far, far more profitable. ?In fact, the competition between all the companies that want to provide content over the internet to your wired tv is driving up the price for content produced for TV.

The Challenge that TV has is not in driving an audience that is bigger than an internet source. That is easy. The challenge is in creating hits that are big enough to maximize revenue and return for that show and to create a promotional platform for other shows.

Now some internet video proponents like to tell you that the audience for broadcast tv is declining significantly with the exception of sports and special live programming, in particular the NFL. They are right. Numbers are down. But what they don?t also tell you is that the financial model has changed. All broadcast networks are owned by ?big conglomerates, or have same ownership as a big conglomerate. Because of this, single shows are no longer make or break. Shows are geared towards specific outlets. So you will see shows on USA Network that in the past might have been on NBC. The result is that viewing for cable networks has skyrocketed and the amount of traditional tv watched has continued to increase.

In addition those over the air broadcast networks are now also getting retransmission fees. That second source of revenue will change how they make programming decisions.

But wait there is more ! It used to be that only movie companies got output deals. An output deal is when a TV network pays a percentage of theatrical revenue for the license to show a movie. Today, TV shows are getting output deals and generating lots of revenue across all the different platforms that show TV shows. Its not just syndication, but those online distributors want to make sure they get the best shows and they are committing up front to buy those shows. An output deal. Found money.

The TV business isn?t dead. It really isn?t even morphing. Sure people will watch video online. They will watch it on phones. They will download it. But the videos that online distributors pay the most for will be those that have done the best on traditional TV. Which in turn means more money for the production of shows.

Think of it like an SAT question. Online video is to TV today like DVDs were to Movies in the past. A great revenue source that correlated to the movie?s boxoffice.

Bottom line is that the better the TV business does, the better Hulu and Netflix will do because their primary content will be in greater demand

That?s not to say the TV business is not going to have challenges. It will. It will become addicted to the money it gets from online sources and when some of these sources and the competition between them dry up, they will be caught not being able to reduce their costs. Expect it.

But the online TV content providers have it worse. Yes, there is a business in delivering content via TVs. It will seem very cool that when you hit a button on your remote a list of distributors like Amazon, Hulu , Netflix and others will pop up for you to watch. Some folks will make good money with it. But it still won?t be the competitor to TV that everyone predicts. Why ? Because just like no one took the time to change the blinking 12:00 on their VCRs back in the day, having to hit the internet button on the remote, or even worse, the input ?button on the remote will not be the path of least resistance for watching tv. Believe it or not, it will be far too much hassle for most people when compared to just turning on and watching ?TV the old fashioned way. And on top of that, distributors like Dish, Directv, Charter, Comcast, etc are working hard to improve their guide experiences which will be faster and easier than their online counterparts.

And last but not least, MOCA, DLNA and good old fashioned wi fi is always going to be a hassle. No one has perfect wi fi at their apartment or house. It always screws up. That may be acceptable to a price sensitive market. But when people want to see Tebow Tebow, buffering just wont cut it.

And let me be the first to describe how Twitter will negatively impact online delivered live TV . Compare the latency of twitter to your phone or Ipad or even TV to the latency of online video over the net to your house, through your house and to your TV. The latency of the video because of all the buffering that is done to reduce interruption of the video will mean that your video feed is behind what you are getting on twitter. Not a problem for ondemand, but not good for communal experiences. So if you all want to watch SharkTank and tweet and FB about it with your friends, its only going to work when you watch on a regular tv feed.

Thats the way I see. Let me know what you think

Faulty proteins may prove significant in identifying new treatments for ovarian cancer

OHSU Knight Cancer Institute study results suggest that more patients than initially thought could potentially be treated with a new class of drugs, PARP inhibitors

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A constellation of defective proteins suspected in causing a malfunction in the body's ability to repair its own DNA could be the link scientists need to prove a new class of drugs will be effective in treating a broad range of ovarian cancer patients, an Oregon Health & Science University Knight Cancer Institute study found.

These research results, published this week in PLoS ONE, have prompted additional exploration into whether the patient population included in clinical trials for drugs that target the enzyme poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) should be expanded. Several forms of cancer are more dependent on PARP for their growth than regular cells, which means that targeting these enzymes when they go haywire is a potentially effective way to treat ovarian cancer. Currently PARP inhibitors are being tested with patients who have two types of malfunctioning proteins, BRCA1 or BRCA2. But, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute study of additional proteins, beyond BRCA proteins, suggests that they too are playing a role in driving ovarian cancer.

Tapping into the potential of PARP inhibitors could change the dynamics of ovarian cancer treatment. There has not been a substantial increase in treatment options for ovarian cancer in the past two decades, said Tanja Pejovic, M.D., Ph.D., gynecologic oncologist at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. Pejovic, who led the study of these additional defective proteins, added that the results provide evidence that further research into the role of multiple proteins is warranted.

Only about 10 to 15 percent of women with ovarian cancer have BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutations.

Pejovic's study of 186 patients with nonhereditary cancer found that 41 percent who had an early recurrence of the disease also had abnormal levels of the other proteins tracked. In contrast, only 19.5 percent of patients who hadn't yet had a recurrence of the disease in three years had abnormal levels of these proteins.

"If we are able to identify the proteins that differentiate these patients at risk for early recurrence, this would open up a new direction in ovarian cancer treatment," Pejovic said.

###

The study which was supported by the Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer (SHOC) Foundation focused on proteins that are supposed to assist cells in repairing harmful breaks in DNA strands, a process called homologous recombination (HR). The malfunctioning of HR is not well understood in ovarian cancers where there is no family history of the disease. However, there is evidence that these proteins influence a patient's ability to respond to drugs and their survival rates after treatment.

Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer and the most common cause of death among women with a gynecologic cancer. About 21,000 ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed annually and about 14,000 deaths occur each year from the disease.

The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, which helped pioneer the field of personalized cancer medicine, is committed to research that identifies the specific mutations driving each individual patient's cancer. Other researchers at the Knight Cancer Institute who contributed to the study are: Weiya Z. Wysham, M.D.; Hong Li, M.S., M.D.; Laura Hays, Ph.D.; Jay Wright; Nupur Pande, Ph.D.; and Maureen Hoatlin, Ph.D.

Groups: Clashes after Tibetan sets self on fire (AP)

BEIJING ? Security forces clashed with angry Tibetans in southwestern China, shooting one person, after a man set himself on fire in the latest protest against Chinese rule, activist groups said.

Local residents began to protest Saturday after seeing police severely beat the man who set himself on fire as they put out the flames, the London-based International Campaign for Tibet said.

"Tibetans at the scene became very distressed and angry and gathered together in what seems to be an impromptu demonstration," Kate Saunders of the group wrote in an email.

Little was known about the person who set himself on fire, although the group cited its sources as saying he was a man and that he was not a monk.

It and the London-based group Free Tibet said a woman was shot during the unrest.

At least 16 Buddhist monks, nuns and other Tibetans are now believed to have set themselves on fire in the past year ? including four in the past week ? mostly in traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

Woeser, a Beijing-based Tibetan poet and activist, posted accounts of the unrest on Twitter that were similar to those reported by the groups.

"A young Tibetan person self-immolated ... the local area has erupted in public protests and marches, and they have been met with military police fire and suppression. There are Tibetan casualties," she wrote. Like some Tibetans, Woeser uses just one name.

The claims could not be independently confirmed. Calls to Aba county's police bureau rang unanswered. A man who answered the phone Sunday at the Aba prefecture government said they hadn't received any reports about a self-immolation or clashes and then hung up. People answering the phones at the lower Aba county and township governments also said they had no information.

Heavy security has turned Aba and the surrounding area into a virtual restricted zone since an anti-government uprising across Tibetan communities in 2008, and foreign reporters have had little or no access.

China chooses Buddhist leaders in Tibet and wants to pick a pro-Beijing successor to the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing considers to be a separatist. China says Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries, but many Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for most of that time.

Chinese authorities routinely deny Tibetan claims of repression, although they have confirmed some self-immolations and accused supporters of the Dalai Lama of encouraging such acts. The Dalai Lama and representatives of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in India say they oppose all violence.
