Report says 3 set themselves on fire in China (AP)

BEIJING ? Three more people have set themselves on fire to protest China's policies toward Tibetans in a politically sensitive area that already has seen ethnic violence this year, a media report and an activist group said.

The report from the U.S.-funded Radio Free Asia said Sunday the three set themselves on fire Friday in Seda country in Sichuan province. It says one person died and the others are in serious condition.

A woman who answered the phone at the county government office Sunday said "no such thing happened." Like many Chinese officials, she refused to give her name.

Calls to county police rang unanswered, while a man at the Ganzi prefecture public security office, which oversees the county, said he had not heard of the incident. He also refused to give his name.

If confirmed, the incidents would bring to at least 19 the number of monks, nuns and lay Tibetans who have set themselves on fire, mostly in traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

The Radio Free Asia report quoted three sources as confirming the incidents, which they said occurred in a remote village near the border with the neighboring province of Qinghai. It did not say if the people who set themselves on fire did so as a group or separately.

"The survivors are seriously injured though the details are difficult to obtain due to the shutting down of communication lines in the area," one source told Radio Free Asia.

The London-based activist group Free Tibet also reported the incidents. It did not provide any further details in a statement, and added that there have been substantial increases in security forces in the area recently.

It has been difficult to get news from the area because the government limited communications following bloody protests last month in Sichuan where Tibetans protested against what they say are hard-line Chinese policies.

Tibetan activist groups say at least six Tibetans were killed in the clashes between police and protesters when police fired on them. The Chinese government says two rioters died and 24 police and firefighters were injured when rock-wielding Tibetan separatists attacked police stations.

The violence and self-immolations come as China enters a sensitive period: The top leaders of the ruling Communist Party will change by the end of this year.

The government has condemned self-immolations and says recent violence in several counties in Sichuan, including Seda, was instigated by forces outside the country wanting to separate Tibet from China.

This has been the region's most violent period since 2008, when deadly rioting in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, spread to Tibetan areas in adjoining provinces. China responded by flooding the area with troops and closing Tibetan regions entirely to foreigners for about a year.

Western reporters trying to visit that part of Sichuan in the last several weeks have been turned away by security forces.

Ex-dictator Noriega hospitalized after possible stroke

Manuel Noriega, Panama's drug-running military dictator of the 1980s, was taken from prison to a public hospital on Sunday after suffering a possible stroke.

Health Minister Franklin Vergara said Noriega's blood pressure was very high. Doctors saw signs of a possible brain hemorrhage when the former military strongman arrived to a hospital.

Further X-rays and evaluations yielded normal results, Vergara said.

"He is conscious, knows where he is and we are not finding any injury with long-term effects at this moment," Vergara said.

Noriega will remain in intensive care for 24 hours, he said.

Panama's National Police said earlier Sunday in a statement that the 77-year-old Noriega had possibly suffered a stroke. Police took him from El Renacer prison where he was serving out his sentence to Hospital Santo Tomas in Panama City.

Paralysis
One of his three daughters, Sandra, was seen entering the hospital, which was guarded by police agents.

In December, Panamanian authorities said Noriega was suffering from mobility due to a stroke several years ago. He had paralysis on his face's left side and leg.

Noriega, who was toppled by a 1989 American invasion, is serving a 20-year sentence for the murders of opponents during his rule.

He spent about 20 years in U.S. and French prisons on drug-trafficking and money-laundering convictions, before returning to Panama on Dec. 11, 2011. Shortly after returning home under heavy security, he was seen publicly in a wheelchair being helped by prison authorities.

Noriega was Panama's longtime intelligence chief before becoming its top leader.

While he had been considered a valued CIA asset for years, the U.S. government soured on him, especially after a top political opponent was killed in 1985 and Noriega appeared to join forces with Latin American drug traffickers.

'Deadly white powder'
U.S. President George H.W. Bush ordered an invasion in December 1989 to oust him from power. He was captured and brought to Miami.

Prosecutors said Noriega helped the Medellin cocaine cartel ship "tons and tons of a deadly white powder" into the United States. But the defense said the indictment "smells all the way from here to Washington."

Jurors convicted him in April 1992 of eight of 10 charges. Under the judge's instructions, they were told not to consider the political side of the case, including whether the U.S. had the right to invade Panama and bring Noriega to trial in the first place.

When his 17-year sentence ended in 2007, France extradited him on money-laundering charges.

Noriega also had legal troubles awaiting him in Panama, where he had been convicted in absentia of murder, embezzlement and corruption charges that carried a combined 60-year prison sentence.

Noriega's return home had little political impact on a country that has enjoyed an economic boom in recent years amid a $5.25 billion expansion of the Panama Canal.

Widely reviled when he was Panama's de facto leader from 1983 until 1989, his small cadre of remaining supporters has kept a low profile.

Activists hoped his return could shed light on the dictatorship's mysteries, including some 100 unsolved killings or disappearances in the period of army rule from 1968 to 1989.

Charlie White, Indiana Election Chief, Found Guilty Of Voter Fraud

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's top elections official could lose his job and his freedom after jurors convicted him of multiple voter fraud-related charges on Saturday, leaving in flux the fate of one of the state's most powerful positions.

Republican Secretary of State Charlie White has held on to his office for more than a year despite being accused of lying about his address on voter registration forms.

A Hamilton County jury found White guilty of six of seven felony charges, including false registration, voting in another precinct, submitting a false ballot, theft and two counts of perjury. He was acquitted on one fraud charge.

White expressed no outward emotion as the verdict was read, and later said outside the courtroom: "'I'm disappointed for my family and the people who supported me."

It wasn't immediately clear what would happen to White's elected office. He has resisted calls to resign from Democrats and Republicans, including Gov. Mitch Daniels, but state law bars anyone convicted of a felony from remaining in office.

White's attorney, Carl Brizzi, said he will ask the judge to reduce the charges to misdemeanors because his client has no criminal background and has a long record of public service.

Daniels announced Saturday he had appointed White's chief deputy, Jerry Bonnet, as interim secretary of state.

"I have chosen not to make a permanent appointment today out of respect for the judge's authority to lessen the verdict to a misdemeanor and reinstate the elected office holder," Daniels said in a statement. "If the felony convictions are not altered, I anticipate making a permanent appointment quickly."

Bonnet has worked for the secretary of state's office since 2005, the statement said.

The jury verdict came after a weeklong trial in which White, who had vigorously protested the charges in hearings before a state elections panel, presented no defense.

Prosecutors said he used his ex-wife's address instead of a condo he had with his fiancee because he didn't want to give up his $1,000-per-month Fishers Town Council salary after moving out of that district. He faced seven felony charges, including voter fraud, perjury and theft.

White, 42, has said the charges ignored a complicated personal life in which he was trying to raise his 10-year-old son, plan his second marriage and campaign for the statewide office he won that November. He said he stayed at his ex-wife's house when he wasn't on the road campaigning and did not live in the condo until after he remarried.

Brizzi told the jury during his closing arguments Friday that White's name was on the condo's bills and documents because he was paying for his fiancee and her children to live there, not because he was living at that address.

No sentencing date was set.

Republican special prosecutor John Dowd expressed satisfaction about the verdict.

"We believe it was about someone who violated the law and cheated the system ? and gamed the system," Dowd said. "And, obviously, the jury thought the same way."

A Marion County judge has ruled that White should be replaced by Democrat Vop Osili, the man he defeated by about 300,000 votes in the November 2010 election, but that ruling is on hold pending an appeal.

Attorney Karen Celestino-Horseman, who watched the trial and spoke on behalf of Indiana Democrats following the verdict, said the party believes White's conviction further affirms that Osili should be secretary of state.

"(White) has been convicted, but the judge has left it open for misdemeanor sentencing. That's something that's going to have to be examined," she said.

During his closing arguments, assistant special prosecutor Dan Sigler Jr. argued that White knew that he was committing voter fraud but did it anyway for political power.

"If we aren't going to enforce election law against the secretary of state of Indiana, who are we going to enforce it against?" Sigler said.

Whole exome sequencing identifies cause of metabolic disease

Saturday, February 4, 2012

Sequencing a patient's entire genome to discover the source of his or her disease is not routine ? yet. But geneticists are getting close.

A case report, published this week in the American Journal of Human Genetics, shows how researchers can combine a simple blood test with an "executive summary" scan of the genome to diagnose a type of severe metabolic disease.

Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute used "whole-exome sequencing" to find the mutations causing a glycosylation disorder in a boy born in 2004. Mutations in the gene (called DDOST) that is responsible for the boy's disease had not been previously seen in other cases of glycosylation disorders.

Whole-exome sequencing is a cheaper, faster, but still efficient strategy for reading the parts of the genome scientists believe are the most important for diagnosing disease. The report illustrates how whole-exome sequencing, which was first offered commercially for clinical diagnosis in 2011, is entering medical practice. Emory Genetics Laboratory is now gearing up to start offering whole exome sequencing as a clinical diagnostic service.

It is estimated that most disease-causing mutations (around 85 percent) are found within the regions of the genome that encode proteins, the workhorse machinery of the cell. Whole-exome sequencing reads only the parts of the human genome that encode proteins, leaving the other 99 percent of the genome unread.

The boy in the case report was identified by Hudson Freeze, PhD and his colleagues. Freeze is director of the Genetic Disease Program at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. A team led by Madhuri Hegde, PhD, associate professor of human genetics at Emory University School of Medicine and director of the Emory Genetics Laboratory, identified the gene responsible. Postdoctoral fellow Melanie Jones is the first author of the paper.

"This is part of an ongoing effort to develop diagnostic strategies for congenital disorders of glycosylation," Hegde says. "We have a collaboration with Dr. Freeze to identify new mutations."

Glycosylation is the process of attaching sugar molecules to proteins that appear on the outside of the cell. Defects in glycosylation can be identified through a relatively simple blood test that detects abnormalities in blood proteins. The sugars are important for cells to send signals and stick to each other properly. Patients with inherited defects in glycosylation have a broad spectrum of medical issues, such as developmental delay, digestive and liver problems and blood clotting defects.

The boy in this case report was developmentally delayed and had digestive problems, vision problems, tremors and blood clotting deficiencies. He did not walk until age 3 and cannot use language. The researchers showed that he had inherited a gene deletion from the father and a genetic misspelling from the mother.

"Over the years, we've come to know many families and their kids with glycosylation disorders. Here we can tell them their boy is a true 'trail-blazer' for this new disease," Freeze said. "Their smiles?that's our bonus checks."

The researchers went on to show that introducing the healthy version of the DDOST gene into the patient's cells in the laboratory could restore normal protein glycosylation. Thus, restoring normal function by gene therapy is conceivable, if still experimental. However, restoration of normal glycosylation would be extremely difficult to achieve for most of the existing cells in the body.

BluntDinerz Food and Drink Blog. Las Vegas Dining Scene-Cocktail ...

Jackpot!

Food Truck and Cocktail Outing Reveals Best Pizza in Las Vegas
The 'Moonlight Mixology'event at 'The Bellagio' was Tuesday night, and The Gourmet Food Truck event was Wednesday night, at the South Point Hotel and Casino The South Point is one of my favorite Las Vegas Casinos. The two events were too juicy for me to to miss out, so I broke up my cocktail and food truck expedition into two fun-filled nights.

Las Vegas, in some parts, is becoming a cool city to stroll since they put most of the walking above strip level. People watching, and sightseeing, is some of the best free Las Vegas entertainment.

The Mixology thing, cleverly named 'Moonlight Mixology,' at Petrossian Bar in The Bellagio, was an "exploration of inventive cocktails" from Master Mixologist Matt Myers. The event will be a regular thing if the powers that be find this one worthy of repeating. Myers put together three cocktails for the event that went from 10p-2a. I arrived around 11:45.

The Facebook events page for the occasion dubiously says to mention 'Beam' at the door. Being one who never had a treehouse, I'm not so much into secret passwords. It must have been a real thing, because the very lovely, and plainly indifferent, host-bot girl at the door gave me no indication that there was anything going on. Apparently, I missed the raffle, the free drink, and the Bellagio swag that a lot of people were walking around with. It never pays to be tardy.

The menu and descriptions for the cocktails that Myers put together, were thoughtfully printed on 8 x 10 office paper, and displayed on a table top, in plastic menu holders. I never got the opportunity to get a photo of it on account of all the people in proximity at the time, and the fact that the staff cleared everything away at 1:30. I would have done the same thing in their shoes. Everyone had cleared out, and the employees had a job to get done. However, I can't remember what was in the two cocktails that I didn't try. If you were there, and remember the drinks, please enlighten us.

'The Flying Dutchman' was my choice. A mix of Heinekin, Knob Creek Single Barrel, Lemongrass syrup, Creme de Peche, and Hum hibiscus liqueur. I watched the bartender hastily put it together, the results were not really that impressive.? It tasted like perfume and lemonade. It's potential came through a little bit with dilution, but I doubt it was the recipe that Myers, wherever he was, had developed. In fact, when I asked another bartender what Hum liqueur is, he had no idea. I had to look it up.

After The Bellagio, I decided to huff it next door, to The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, it's a totally cool place to get your stroll on. One of a few Las Vegas hotels where I don't feel like a local among tourists. The third floor is particularly stylish, and mellow. There is some cool artwork by the banquet rooms, and they put all of the restaurants in a circle up there, in one convenient place. It's kind of like a fine dining food court. It's about time someone thought of that. It can be murder trying to find a restaurant in some of these Las Vegas hotels. The common area of the fancy food court is a totally urban ed out, chill-hard lounge, with a pool table, Foosball, and cool views of the city.

On this visit, The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas jumped up to the top of my list for definite recommendations on where to get some late night food. More accurately, I stumbled upon a true find. A where-have-you-been-all-my-life find. It doesn't qualify for the Las Vegas Cheap Eats, but frugality is not an issue here. Not with this. Read on to learn about my newest find.?

On the circle back from my stroll, a beacon of black and green caught my eye, and I instantly knew what it was. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a? 'Galaga' machine at the end of the hallway. The hallway is positioned right between Jaleo, and their next door neighbo. It looks like it might lead to an office, or some type of employees only area.

As the tractor beam pulled me in, I knew unmistakeably from the smell of tomato sauce, and sausage, that I was walking towards a pizza shop. What I didn't know, was that in about ten minutes, I would be eating the best pizza in Las Vegas. No contest. My initials will be on the top of Galaga's high score list soon.

The little slice of pizza heaven is the baby of The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas' F&B director. He must be a nice boy from New York, who felt sorry for us out here in the desert who vote for Pizza Hut every year in the Las Vegas Review-Journal's annual 'Best of Las Vegas.'? Putting an awesome pizza shop like this, in a spot like this, is really a sweet idea. The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas has access to the best ingredients in the world, and they can procure what it takes to make a quality pie. Like high-gluten flour, quality meats and cheese, and the facilities to make their own sausage. Sausage that had me drooling, practically. Plus, they have an old Italian dude hand-tossing the dough. I devoured every last crumb of those two slices, and woke up the next day wanting more.
They're open until 4am, 5am on Friday, and Saturday. Heads up- If you're looking for a bargain, this isn't the place. The slices are $4.50, and .50 per topping. Worth twice as much, in my opinion.

This post went long, so I'm gonna break it up. Read episode 2 of part 7- The Southpoint Hotel and Casino's Gourmet Food Truck Festival. lvfrankg ONE LOVE > OUR LOVE
