New Member Interview with Wave Accounting

SIIA recently welcomed, Canadian company, Wave Accounting to the membership. I spoke with their Co-founder and CEO, Kirk Simpson, to learn more about their business. Read the full interview below.

Rhianna: Welcome to SIIA. Tell me about Wave Accounting and what differentiates you from other accounting/payroll products?

Kirk: Wave Accounting is a free online accounting application that is ideal for small businesses with 9 employees or less, as well as bigger companies. Wave offers small business owners easy accounting with unlimited invoicing, expense tracking, reporting, personal finance, multi-user/multi-business access and more?all 100% free. More than 100,000 small businesses have signed up for Wave in more than 200 countries around the world. In its first year alone, Wave eliminated 1,173,712 minutes of manual data entry. The company also recently secured $5 million in Series A funding in Q4 of 2011.

We differentiate ourselves from the competition with smart technology and an innovative pricing model. Some competitors have incorporated some of the features we?re using (bank data aggregation, for instance), but none of them has the whole package, and none have the focus that we do, of fundamentally changing the user experience for small businesses with accounting needs.

Rhianna: I see that you are planning to launch a US version of your product later this year. What hurdles have you faced taking the product across borders?

Kirk: Wave Accounting is already in over 200 countries, including the US. Our Payroll product (Wave Payroll), is scheduled to launch in the US later in 2012. Payroll is a far more challenging product to take across borders because of the tax & legislative compliance that is required. In order to meet that challenge, we?ve been focusing on hiring talent and forming partnerships with organizations to help get us there.

Rhianna:Last quarter you were recognized with a couple of industry awards, including the Deloitte Companies-to-Watch Awards, and the People?s Choice at CIX. What has that type of recognition meant to your business?

Kirk:It?s been incredibly helpful in that these awards have generated a lot of additional awareness for Wave that we might not have otherwise received. ?Additionally, winning these awards has also given us credibility in the market, which has led to both increased customer acquisition AND customer retention.

Rhianna: Now you have an interesting business model, your accounting product is absolutely free. You monetize from advertising within your product. What feedback have you received from customers and advertisers alike?

Kirk:As you can imagine, our customers LOVE the fact that Wave is free. We target very small businesses (under 9 employees), so keeping an eye on their expenses is obviously top of mind for many of them. Our customers tend to be very web savvy, and often rely on many other free web-based tools (like Dropbox for example) to use in their business. From an advertising perspective, the offers that we serve up in the application are extremely relevant to small business owners, so they appreciate that not only do they have a great free accounting application, but they?re also getting some very rich & exclusive offers on products & services that they are probably already spending money on for their business (office supplies, small business banking products, email marketing services, etc.) ?From an advertisers perspective, Wave has provided them with an ultra-targeted audience, and they?ve been very happy with the results. We?re able to match targeted offers against aggregated spending levels in various categories.

FERC settlement with Constellation largest since 2005

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Constellation Energy Group Inc's $245 million settlement with regulators over charges of power market manipulation includes the largest fine handed out by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission since 2005, the agency said on Monday.

A unit of Baltimore-based Constellation Friday agreed to pay a civil penalty of $135 million, return $110 million in unjust profits and reassign four traders following a FERC investigation into manipulation of the New York wholesale power market from September 2007 to December 2008.

Constellation admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement, which paved the way for Monday's completion of its $7.9 billion merger with Chicago-based Exelon Corp. The deal creates one of the largest U.S. power companies, with operations in 47 states and Canada.

Constellation has 10 days to pay the $135 million fine paid to the U.S. Treasury within 10 days of the settlement, FERC said, while the $110 million in disgorged profits will go into a fund to benefit electric customers in the affected regions.

"That's nothing to sneeze at; it's a really big number," said Paul Patterson, an energy analyst with Glenrock Associates in New York.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 significantly increased the penalties FERC can impose to $1 million per day per violation, up from $10,000 per day per violation.

The fine against Constellation dwarfs FERC's $25 million fine related to the 2008 Florida blackout. Since 2007, FERC has issued $172 million in fines, excluding the Constellation fine, according to its website.

Of the $110 million in unjust profits, $78 million will go to the New York Independent System Operator. The New England grid agency will get $20 million and PJM will get $6 million.

In addition, $6 million will be divided equally among the grid agencies in New York, New England, PJM, the Midwest ISO, the Southwest Power Pool and the California ISO to be used to improve market surveillance capability.

In the agreement, FERC said its Office of Enforcement found that Constellation Energy Commodities Group traders violated rules prohibiting power market manipulation and submission of inaccurate information to any grid agency.

In a separate statement, the New York grid operator said its market monitor in 2008 first identified trading activity in its "virtual" trading markets by Constellation that led to consistent losses and caused a divergence in New York's day-ahead and real-time prices, "the opposite of what should happen when virtual trading works properly," the ISO said.

After New York moved to restrict Constellation trading in the virtual market, FERC launched an investigation to determine if Constellation's trading activity would have benefited its financial positions in the "contract for differences" market which is outside the New York ISO's view.

FERC said Constellation's own training materials said traders should not take losses to boost profits in a different market, saying that regulators would consider such activity market manipulation.

Constellation said it still did not believe that its practices violated rules, but agreed to the consent stipulation in order to end the investigation and move on with the merger.

"We believe Constellation's trading practices in question were lawful portfolio risk management transactions," said Mayo Shattuck, Constellation chief executive who became executive chairman of Exelon with the merger.

"Even so, these practices do not reflect Constellation's trading operations today, nor in the future," Shattuck said in a statement.

Constellation agreed to remove four traders from any jobs involving wholesale energy trading, take additional steps to improve its compliance program to "more clearly demonstrate the risk management purposes of its transactions" and retain written and phone records for five years.

Beliefs about genes, God, can change health communication strategies

Beliefs about nature and nurture can affect how patients and their families respond to news about their diagnosis, according to Penn State health communication researchers.

Understanding how people might respond to a health problem, especially when the recommendations for adapting to the condition may seem contradictory to their beliefs, is crucial to planning communication strategies, said Roxanne Parrott, Distinguished Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences and Health Policy and Administration.

People affected with known genetic or chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome, Marfan syndrome and neurofibromatosis, tend to communicate differently about their illness based on their uncertainty of genetics' role in health.

"When a person is uncertain about an illness, it can also predict how they manage that uncertainty and how they desire to talk or communicate about the condition," Parrott said.

When patients and family members are willing to talk about a diagnosis, they have a better chance of connecting with sources of help and support.

"Emotions experienced about a condition impact patient and family members' communication," said Parrott. "How fearful, angry, or sad they feel is part of the uncertainty about the condition and affects how patients and their families seek to navigate the situation."

"What we can do is design programs for genetic counselors that suggest different scripts for communicating based on understanding how people might respond to a diagnosis," Parrott said.

Parrott, who worked with Kathryn F. Peters, a certified genetic counselor and instructor of biobehavioral health, and Tara Traeder, graduate student in communication arts and sciences, said people clustered into four groups based on how they understand the role genetics plays in health. Uncertain relativists are not sure what role personal behaviors, religious faith and social networks play in genetics and health. Personal control relativists tend to be more certain about how personal behavior affects genetics. Genetic determinists believe that only genes determine their health, while integrated relativists believe that behavior, faith and support can affect genetic expression.

While integrated relativists seem to have the most balanced approach to understanding genetics and health, the researchers said that they also had the highest levels of uncertainty about living with the condition of the four groups. People who were more likely to believe genetics are the dominant predictor of their health wanted to communicate more about their condition than those who believe they have more personal control in health.

The researchers, who reported their findings in the online version of the journal Health Communication, analyzed data from a survey of 541 family members or patients diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, Marfan syndrome or Down syndrome. Participants were asked questions about the status of their diagnosis, beliefs on genetics, personal behavior, religious and social life, illness uncertainty and how they manage their uncertainty about living with the diagnosis or living with a family member who has had the diagnosis.

To determine how the participants understood the connection between genetics, and personal behavior in health, the researchers asked participants several questions including whether alcohol can cause changes in the genes of adults. They were also asked whether participants believed drug use could cause genetic changes.

The researchers also asked participants how a higher power or attending a house of worship could affect genes to assess the religious beliefs of the participant.

The survey explored participants' negative feelings and links to how they preferred to communicate about the condition.

Parrott said that communication strategies around the four frameworks linked to beliefs about the role of genetics for health can help simplify health communication strategies and prepare counselors for patient responses.

"A significant number of people are affected by these conditions and it's important to remember that communicating with patients and family is not always a simple thing," said Parrott. "There are times they need to be hopeful and times that they need to be mad."

Steve Jobs and American Jobs

The economy added another 227,000 jobs in March, the Labor Department reported Friday. That's good news, sort of. It means that the recovery is slowly progressing. At this rate, we will be back to pre-recession employment levels sometime around 2018.

However, this growth in jobs was not enough for wages to keep place with inflation; nor did the unemployment rate drop, but stayed stuck at 8.3 percent. Why? Because folks who had given up have started entering the labor force again, but the percentage of people in the labor force is still two points lower than it was before the recession began. A new study by the Economic Policy Institute reports that earnings declined over the past decade even for college graduates -- so much for the education cure.

In short, the recession made a bad problem worse, but the economy on the eve of the recession was nothing to be proud of. Throughout the first decade of the new century, before the recession hit, wages lagged behind living costs for the vast majority of Americans -- because those in the top one percent were capturing such a large share of the economy's total productivity gains.

Some of this trend was the result of globalization undercutting the bargaining power of U.S. workers; some of it resulted from weakened trade unions and minimum wage laws lagging behind inflation.

Flat or declining wages did not result from declining average productivity. So when we finally climb out of this jobs recession, perhaps we can belatedly confront these deeper trends.

I have been writing about the hotel workers union in New York City.

Thanks to an extraordinarily effective union, Local 6 of the hotel and restaurant workers union, nearly every large hotel in Manhattan is unionized, and everyone who works in these hotels, from dishwashers to room cleaners to doormen to banquet waiters earns a middle class wage. The union recently signed a seven year contract giving workers a 27 percent wage.

Local 6 is an exceptionally effective union, and New York is a unique tourist destination. But since the vast majority of jobs in America will soon be service sector jobs, not vulnerable to global competition, there is no good economic reason why they can't all be middle class jobs. The challenge is political. We as a society simply need to decide, as President Obama famously told "Joe the Plumber," that we want to "spread the wealth around" rather than having it concentrate at the very top. All service jobs could pay a living wage. How to do that? Unions, wage regulation, progressive taxation, and government using existing powers over contractors that it seldom exercises.

But what about manufacturing? This brings me to the other Jobs of my title, the late Steve Jobs.

The New York Times, in a two part series earlier this year on Apple's Chinese contractor, Foxconn, finally made front page news and added some telling detail to what was already fairly well known. The cool, must-have iPads, iPhones, and iPods to which we are increasingly addicted are manufactured with brutal sweatshop labor in Shenzhen, China, where 230,000 employees are making an average of less than $2 an hour work in a single factory complex. Foxconn's dormitories now have nets outside to prevent suicides.

I recently saw a one-man show, Mike Daisey's amazing "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," in which Daisey, a spellbinding monologue artist, recounts his own conversations with the workers of Foxconn in Shenzhen.

Daisey was on to Foxconn long before the Times. If you get a chance to see this show, which runs for one more week at New York's Public Theatre and which will be on tour in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere later this year, don't miss it. Two weeks ago, Daisey made the stunning decision to put his script in the public domain, so that other performances could go viral.

Daisey wonders out loud: what if everyone who buys these products began upping the pressure on Apple to do right by its workers?

I would add: What if Apple made a decision to bring this work home, and to pay decent wages for it, say $20 an hour. Right now, this is literally impossible, because the production facilities to make such products no longer exist in the United States. But the Pentagon has insisted that America hang on to production capacity for certain other sensitive micro-electronics products. And if hostilities escalated between the U.S. and Beijing, you can bet that we would see a crash program to restore more micro-electronics output at home.

Apple earns about $600,000 per year per employee. It can well afford to share a little more of that with its workers.

The New York Times calculated that it would add only about $65 to the cost of an iPad or iPhone to produce it at home at good wages. And over time, it would tend to cost less, since higher-paid workers lead the company to redouble its investment in automation.

Apple can certainly afford this transition. It is now the richest company in the world, sitting on a pile of nearly a hundred billion dollars in cash. If Apple led, it would become bad form for America's other prestigious companies to manufacture for U.S. markets in foreign sweatshops.

Ralph Nader recently published the most improbable of books, a novel titled Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us. Nader, looking at the grotesque economic and political power imbalance in the U.S., imagined that a cabal of billionaires led by Warren Buffet and Ted Turner have an outbreak of conscience and become crusaders for progressive reform. It's Nader's way of both laying out a reform agenda and spotlighting where the real power lies.

It's a lovely fantasy, but it's not going to happen -- any more than Apple, out of the goodness of its corporate heart, is about to decide to phase out its high-tech Asian sweatshops in favor of decently compensated production jobs in the United States.

But what could perhaps happen is a mass movement of Apple consumers, declaring that it's not cool to treat the people who build these products like beasts of burden or like expendable non-human parts.

Alternatively, as incomes keep falling further behind the cost of living for most Americans, we can comfort ourselves with the thought that we enjoy the coolest of gadgets and that others are even poorer than we are.

Robert Kuttner is co-editor of The American Prospect and a senior fellow at Demos. His latest book is A Presidency in Peril.
