?

It doesn?t matter whether you enjoy Broadway, reggae, comedy or ballet?you don?t have to leave the East Valley to experience the fine arts. The performing arts centers in Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Queen Creek, Higley and Apache Junction offer shows by both local and national performers, art exhibits, classes and festivals. And, while the actors may ?break a leg? during the course of an evening, you won?t have to pay an arm and a leg to appreciate their talent.

?

Mesa Arts Center

The Mesa Arts Center (MAC) is the largest performing arts center in Arizona, boasting four theaters, a contemporary arts museum, and 14 visual and performing arts studios where students, residents and non-residents alike, can learn ceramics, jewelry making, drawing, photography, dance, theater, and more. It also features some of the state?s premier performing arts groups, including Ballet Etudes, East Valley Children?s Theatre, Mesa Encore Theatre, and Southwest Shakespeare Company, in addition to celebrities like Bill Cosby (March 30) and musicians like Yo-Yo Ma (April 22).

?

But, the MAC is just as well known for its free events and festivals. From noon to 9 p.m. March 9-18, the MAC hosts its inaugural Festival of Creativity. Guests can hear live musical performances, watch artists at work and, for a $5 fee, tour the giant inflatable sculpture Mirazozo. Free music, art and entertainment highlight the Mesa Arts and Culture Festival (MACFest) with upcoming dates March 10, March 17 and April 7. And, on the first Sunday of each month, families can visit the Mesa Contemporary Arts, Arizona Museum of Natural History, and Arizona Museum for Youth for free as part of the Target-sponsored 3 for Free event.

?

Tempe Center for the Arts

The Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) is as much about art as it is about performances. Its gallery displays works by both locally- and internationally-recognized artists, and the small display to the left of the main entrance features works by local high school students. There?s even a sculpture garden, and from the third floor observation deck, you can look out over Tempe Town Lake.

?

Of course, there?s more to the TCA than art and great views. Nine performing arts groups, including Childsplay and the Tempe Symphony Orchestra, share the TCA?s two theaters. Upcoming events include comedy group Bully Mammoth (March 17), Brazilian pianist and singer Eliane Elias (March 24), and Childsplay?s Tom?s and the Library Lady (April 7-15).

?

Chandler Performing Arts Center

When the recently refurbished Chandler Performing Arts Center opened in August 1989, it became one of the nation?s first joint ventures between a city and a school district. The center, which is located on the Chandler High School campus, hosts nationally-recognized entertainers like Debbie Reynolds, Wayne Newton and Chaka Khan, as well as Ballet Etudes, special events and high school performances.

?

It also reaches out to children in the community through its summer camps, Glee camps and art workshops. Once a year, the center?s gallery displays the high school?s artwork and photographs.

?

This spring, the center will host The Awesome ?80s Prom (March 19-24), Joan Rivers (March 30), the Chandler Symphony Orchestra (April 18) and Ballet Etudes? performance of Cinderella (May 18-20).

?

Queen Creek Performing Arts Center

Part of the Queen Creek High School campus, the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center (QCPAC) offers a mix of touring theatrical and community productions, plus a special event series that in the past has featured country performers like Vince Gill and Little Big Town. In the upcoming months, the community theater will present Pride and Prejudice (April 20-23) and Oliver (June 22-25). Spring break camp is March 12-16 and March 19-23.

?

Higley Performing Arts Center

The Higley Performing Arts Center, located on the Higley High School campus, brings theatrical and musical productions to the Gilbert community. At times, the 1,220-seat theater serves as a venue for the Chandler Performing Arts Center?s offerings, but is also home of the Copperstate Repertory Co., which will stage Seussical this spring (March 23-31). In addition to theatrical works, the repertory company offers musical theater camps in October, March and June, coinciding with the school?s breaks.

?

Apache Junction Performing Arts Center

Although used primarily by the school district?it is part of the local high school, after all?the Apache Junction Performing Arts Center does provide some community programming. On Monday evenings through March, the Arizona Lecture Series concludes with Explorations, Disappearances & Murder in Canyon Country (March 12), Desert Drugstore (March 19) and Goldfield?s History in the Superstition Mountains (March 26).

Raccoons ? Exotic Pets | Organic Garden - ysiduyba's Space

Raccoons are adorable little animals with their grey to brown coats and black-masked eyes. They are native to North America, but have been introduced into Europe for almost a hundred years, particularly in the area of Austria and Germany. Their preferred habitat is deciduous woods and forests. However, some people think that they are good pets too.

An adult raccoon is the size of a middle-sized dog ? about knee-height and weighing up to about 35 pounds. Their front paws are about the size of a child?s hands and they have five fingers on each hand or paw, which enables them to open doors and lift lids et cetera. This makes them pretty skillful thieves and reinforces the impression of a masked highway robber.

Raccoons will eat almost anything ? they are omnivores. They not just eat fruit, nuts and berries, but they will also take small birds, eggs, rodents, amphibians and fish. They are also fairly partial to cooked food and will go through a dustbin or garbage heap searching for the left-overs of human meals. They also pilfer pets? food that has been left out in the garden.

Tame raccoons normally wash their food before eating it, whereas this strange habit is rarely witnessed in the wild. Raccoons can carry very serious illnesses one of which, rabies, is dangerous to humans, but they also carry roundworms which can be passed on to humans with little impact on our health. Most raccoons die of predation or canine distemper. They can infect domestic dogs with the deadly canine parvovirus.

If you see a wild raccoon in your backyard, you should report it to the authorities so that it can be checked for disease as about 38% of rabies cases in America come from raccoon bites. Raccoons do tend to bite quite freely.

If you find an orphan raccoon when wandering in the woods, it is very tempting to take it home, but there is a fairly high danger of it having rabies. If you want a raccoon for a pet, it is better to buy one from a breeder.

They are notoriously hard to train. In most states it is illegal to keep a raccoon as a pet, but where it is permitted, the owner normally has to get an exotic pets license.

You should have them vaccinated against rabies and distemper and treated for roundworm before you take one into your home. If you purchase from a dealer, this should all ready have been taken care of for you.

Raccoons are difficult pets because they are in essence nocturnal creatures. They can be trained to sleep at night but it is not natural for them. Their diet can be a problem as well. Because they eat ?anything?, they require a very varied diet including live animals like frogs and mice from time to time. Pet raccoons frequently become overweight due to excessive feeding and a lack of exercise.

Pet raccoons ought to not be re-released into the wild if you find them rather a problem to take care of, because they will not know how to look after themselves. A pet raccoon is for life, which can last for twenty years.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many of subjects, but is now involved with distemper in raccoons. If you want to know more, please go to our site at Distemper Vaccines

Balotelli on borrowed time as City title bid fades

Mario Balotelli's Manchester City future was in the balance after manager Roberto Mancini admitted his patience with the striker was wearing thin.

Balotelli was sent off for the third time this season in the 89th minute of City's 1-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday that left them eight points behind leaders Manchester United with six games left and hopes of a first English title in 44 years all but extinguished.

The Italy forward was fortunate to avoid being dismissed for a 20th minute challenge on Alex Song that went apparently unseen by referee Martin Atkinson but could be subject to further review by the Football Association, raising the possibility of Balotelli being suspended for City's remaining fixtures.

Mancini, who refused to concede the title to United, has repeatedly backed Balotelli, despite the player attracting controversy on and off the pitch.

But after Sunday's match he insisted his compatriot must change his ways while admitting Balotelli, who was red-carded for a foul on Bacary Sagna, could be sold come the end of this season.

"We have six games and he will not play in the next six games," Mancini said of Balotelli, although a City official said that was because he expected the FA to take severe disciplinary action against the 21-year-old, who is facing a minimum three-game ban.

"But I love him as a guy, I love him as a player, because I know him. He's not a bad guy. He's a fantastic player.

"But, at this moment, I'm very sorry because he continues to lose his talent, his quality.

"I hope, for him, that he can understand that he's in a bad way for his future, and he can change his behaviour in the future."

Asked if Balotelli would be sold, Mancini added: "Probably -- but I don't know. It depends, because Balotelli is a fantastic player.

"Every time we risk one sent off, like today (Sunday). But he can score also in the last minute.

"It's clear he's created big problems, but he's scored important goals. He's made mistakes, he's young, he doesn't understand it here (England)."

"He needs to change his behaviour if he wants to improve his life. I've seen players finish in two or three years with huge talent. He needs to change."

Mancini's own position will now be examined, but the manager insisted he should be given more time by City's wealthy United Arab Emirates based-owner Sheikh Mansour.

"Sure, 100 percent," he said when asked if he was the right man for the job.

"When I arrived, City were seventh or eighth. After six months, we were fighting for the Champions League and lost to Tottenham one game from the end.

"Second year, we were second and won the FA Cup. Today (Sunday), we have 15 points more than last year.

"When you start a project it's important you improve. You work hard. This is a difficult situation because we thought we could win the title. We were there for 28 games. But we need to improve. We need more experience and to change something. We've only worked here for two years."

Mikel Arteta's 87th minute goal moved Arsenal two points clear of north London rivals Tottenham in the race for third place and qualification for the Champions League proper.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger warned there could be no drop in standards when his team faced relegation-threatened Wolves on Wednesday.

"We know it will be a different game. Today was a game with a lot of hype and focus. They were going for the championship, we were going for a Champions League place.

"Now we'll be fighting with a team trying not to go down, and they'll be fighting to survive."

The Frenchman added: "We have taken 24 points from 27 and the points we've got, many of them, have been deserved. We have improved as a team, 100 percent, for sure.

"Unfortunately, we started from too deep (to win the title).

"We had a blip in January that cost us severely. We are 10 points from City today so, even starting where we started, if we'd not lost our games in January, we'd be there."

FILE -This photo undated file photo provided by the U.S. Army shows Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri pictured on the deck of cards put out by the U.S. military to help capture the most wanted officials of Saddam Hussein's regime. A video posted online Saturday, April 7, 2012 purports to show Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the highest ranking member of Saddam Hussein's ousted regime still at large, criticizing Iraq's Shiite-led government (AP Photo/U.S. Army, File)

(AP) ? A video posted online Saturday purports to show Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the highest ranking member of Saddam Hussein's ousted regime still at large, lashing out against Iraq's Shiite-led government.

It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the video or determine when it was made.

The man in the video, posted on a website linked to Saddam's now-outlawed Baath party, was introduced as al-Douri and bore a striking physical resemblance to the former Saddam deputy. He noted that nine years had passed since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, suggesting the video was made recently.

Wearing an olive military uniform and eyeglasses, he criticized Iraq's Shiite-dominated government, led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and what he said was meddling by neighboring Shiite powerhouse Iran.

"Everyone can hear the sounds of danger echoing daily and threatening this country," he said during the hour-long address, adding that al-Maliki's Dawa Party "has announced Iraq as the Shiite capital, and called on all Arab leaders to surrender to this reality."

Al-Douri has been reported dead or captured more than once in the past. He has not been seen in public since the U.S.-led invasion, though audio tapes purporting to be from him have been released. His whereabouts are not known.

Al-Douri is believed to have played a key role in financing Sunni insurgents seeking to undermine Iraq's post-Saddam government. He was the "king of clubs" in the deck of playing cards issued by the U.S. to help troops identify the most-wanted members of Saddam's regime.

Ali al-Moussawi, a media adviser for al-Maliki, said the tape is meant to "boost the morale of the terrorists."

"Al-Douri wants to spread terrorism and sectarian violence under the pretext of resistance," he said. "This will not affect the work of the government or the political process."

Al-Moussawi said al-Douri is still a wanted man, but that he doubts that al-Douri is still in Iraq because his need for extensive medical care in a well-equipped clinic would make it impossible to hide.

Also Saturday, a bomb hidden in a plastic bag blew up on a minibus, killing two passengers and wounding nine in Baghdad's commercial heart of Karrada, according to police and hospital officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Deadly attacks have declined in Iraq in recent weeks, but dozens are still killed every month. March saw the lowest monthly toll for violent deaths since the 2003 U.S.-invasion.

From the Editor's Desk: HTC all up in here; all your SGSIII's are fake; apologies to Dropbox

Over NYC

Exciting times, folks. I'm writing this from somewhere over New York and Pennsylvania and Maryland and Virginia, on the way home from the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE event, and recuperated from the 3 a.m. release of our HTC One X/One S/Sense 4 content earlier in the week. And I'm excited. I'm excited for us to have new devices to play with and explore and write about. And I'm excited for you folks to get your hands on them, too. (And if you haven't waded into our EVO 4G LTE forums, you're missing out on some great stuff.)

It's easy to get caught up in it all, even for us. It's easy to see what we want to see. The One X isn't perfect. The One S isn't perfect. The EVO 4G LTE has a ridiculous name (though at least it doesn't have any commas in it), and folks are freaking out too much over its design (which hardly is the worst thing in the world) without having actually held the damn thing.

A deep breath might be needed. And judging by our completely unscientific poll, 70 percent of you are plenty happy with what you've seen so far.

But you know what the really fun part is? This is still pretty early. HTC's just the first of the major manufacturers to unveil its new generation of Android smartphones. Samsung and Motorola are still to come. We've gotten an early look at LG, but still need to spend some quality time with them. So, yeah. Right now we're all focused on HTC, and that's fine. But there's still more to come.

Mike Wallace's dark secret -- depression

Evan Agostini / AP

By Sharon Waxman, TheWrap.com

I met Mike Wallace on a waning summer afternoon less than a decade ago. He was golden brown, stripped to the waist and came crashing through the back door of Art Buchwald's porch on Martha's Vineyard.

"Hi, I'm Mike!" he said, extending a hand, his white teeth flashing.

The man was a legend, and I shrunk back instinctively. But instead he proceeded to grill me about who I was, why and where I was a journalist, my next career plans and did they make any sense.

I was smitten. For as long as I could remember, Mike Wallace and "60 Minutes" managed to do what seemed otherwise impossible: great journalism on television.

Wallace always seemed fearless, and in fact on that day -- vibrant and powerful late in his 80s - he seemed timeless too.

Wallace was one of Buchwald's closest friends. They would spend summers on the Vineyard together (that day Wallace had just come up from exercising on the beach, visiting Art who was recovering from a stroke).

And Art was a friend of mine, a late-breaking relationship during which we talked for hours. One of the things we talked about was Art's recurring bouts with depression. It was the thing that he shared with two of his closest friends: William Styron, the novelist, and Mike Wallace.

The three of them would discreetly appear together at support groups, calling themselves "The Blues Brothers," Buchwald told me.

I could understand Buchwald and Styron as suffering from depression: a humorist (a common affliction among them) and a novelist who wrote about the illness in "Darkness Visible."

But Wallace was a surprise. Because he was familiar to us all as the aggressive journalist who asked the fearless questions of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and Malcolm X, his struggles with depression seemed hard to fathom.

But it was the case. In 1996, Wallace went public with his illness, and asked the Senate's Special Committee on Aging for more federal funds for depression research.

He told the committee that he had felt "lower, lower, lower than a snake's belly," and had tried to commit suicide. (The depression apparently first appeared after being sued for libel by Gen. William C. Westmoreland, who sought $120 million for a 1982 "CBS Reports" documentary, "The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception.")

I don't know if Wallace succeeded in winning funds for research. But he overcame his depression and went on to continue one of the most storied careers in American journalism.

He is missed, and a man worthy of our great admiration. RIP, Mike Wallace.

How will you remember Mike Wallace? Tell us on Facebook.
