Small Business Dojo ? Benefits to Outsourcing Your Bookkeeping

The people you hire to work for your company provide the services you need to make your business operate. A bookkeeper manages the accounts payable, accounts receivable and general cash flow of a business. Although these are vital processes for the success of your business, explore the benefits to outsourcing your bookkeeping services instead.

Standard Employment

Standard employees cost a significant amount of money when you factor in the expenses connected with employing a worker. You will pay the bookkeeper?s salary, employment benefits and employer payroll taxes. In addition, the cost to hire employees involves advertising, interviewing, testing and training.

Freelance Bookkeepers

By contrast, freelance bookkeepers often fit into your business design effortlessly, costing as much as 10 to 20 percent less than a salaried employee. When you factor in the other savings such as reduced management and training, the yearly savings may be as much as 50 percent over a salaried bookkeeper. In addition, freelancers by nature know that they are expendable. They usually produce a higher quality work product to ensure that you continue their services. An independent contractor may have more experience with a wider variety of applications and clients to enable the delivery of better service.

Pay For What You Need

A salaried bookkeeper probably sits at a desk from 9 to 5 every day doing a little bit of everything. By outsourcing a bookkeeper, you to pay for only bookkeeping services as you need them. When you have very specific bookkeeping needs, an outsourced bookkeeper will work only the time necessary to complete that work. You will pay for only the time spent on your accounting needs and you won?t pay for other unrelated duties.

Distance

A freelance bookkeeper will have a distanced perspective, which can have a positive effect on your business. For example, you will not experience office politics when outsourced employees because they won?t come into real contact with each other. You should receive realistic and honest reports about your business accounting books. Your outsourced bookkeeper will also have less opportunity to steal from you because this person won?t have authority to sign off on bank accounts and won?t process payroll payments.

Sands' Adelson plans $35 billion casino-resort in Spain

MACAU (Reuters) - Billionaire Sheldon Adelson said he plans to spend $35 billion on a mini-Las Vegas strip in Spain, where he is courting the country's two top urban areas, Barcelona and Madrid, with plans for a casino complex.

Adelson, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp, later presided over the opening of his new casino property in the former Portuguese colony of Macau, the world's largest casino destination, where he is expected to increase market share considerably over the next 12 months.

"We are looking at 12 integrated resorts, 3,000 rooms each. A mini Las Vegas, about half the size of the Las Vegas strip in Spain for the European market," said Adelson, clad in a dark suit and sporting a matching red chequered tie and handkerchief, speaking on Wednesday ahead of the Macau opening.

Each building would cost between $2.5 billion and $3 billion and target customers from western and eastern Europe.

Adelson did not address the debt crisis that has gripped Europe, although he has said the Spanish complex would be a five to 10-year project, by which time he expected demand to have picked up significantly.

Some analysts still see the success of the Spanish venture as dependent on tax breaks which Adelson is reported to be seeking.

"While we typically favor investments in Asia given the ultra-high appetite to gamble, we would be positive on investments in places like Spain provided the government subsidized the investment through a low gaming tax," said Aaron Fischer, head of consumer and gaming at CLSA Asia Pacific Markets in Hong Kong.

"The post-tax operating margin would then be high enough to support the high upfront capital investment resulting in a reasonable return on invested capital," Fischer said.

Las Vegas Sands in February said it was planning an investment of 15 billion euros ($20 billion) for a Spanish casino complex that would include 36,000 hotel beds, 18,000 slot machines and three golf courses.

BANKING ON ASIA

Adelson said he would continue to develop resorts in Asia after the success of his properties in Macau and Singapore, where his casino is among the most profitable in the world.

"We are looking to build two each in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Taiwan is late in catching up. There is pending legislation in the other three countries," said Adelson, one of the world's richest men and worth an estimated $25 billion, according to Forbes.

Under its $31 billion Macau unit Sands China Ltd, the group already has two casinos in the special administrative region of China just one hour by ferry from Hong Kong.

Adelson, characterized by his red hair and outspoken comments, is seen by many in the industry as one of the major catalysts that helped transform Macau's seedy gambling dens into a broader casino resort destination.

He took a big gamble to build his gargantuan Venetian property, the world's sixth-largest building in the world by area, when the Cotai land strip was still a marshy swamp.

Sands officially opened its new property on Wednesday in a ceremony that included lion dancing and tightrope walkers suspended from the tops of its two colossal casino structures.

The new Sands Cotai Central will cost $5 billion on completion, slightly less than the company's $6 billion Marina Bay Sands resort in Singapore. "The total cost up till now is $4.4 billion, but who is counting?" Adelson said, laughing.

It is twice the cost of local player Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd's Galaxy Macau, which opened last year.

The Himalayan- and Polynesian-themed project will add 5,800 hotel rooms to Macau's supply-constrained market, as well as 300,000 square feet of gaming space and 1.2 million square feet of shopping, entertainment, dining and convention facilities.

Estimated to increase Macau's total hotel capacity by 26 percent, it has opened the Conrad and Holiday Inn hotel brands and will open a Sheraton hotel in the second half.

The Holiday Inn and Conrad hotels are located side by side separated via a skylit shopping arcade. The interior has been designed as an indoor rainforest, with escalators surrounded by parrot green leafy palms and cascading waterfalls.

CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY

The opening of Sands Cotai Central comes after lengthy delays in construction in 2008 when the financial crisis hit and the company laid off hundreds of workers.

Adelson, 78, said the delay was not just due to financing, but also a shortage of labor and issues over the number of gaming tables.

As the only operator to open a new casino resort in Macau this year, analysts say Sands China is likely to increase its approximately 16 percent share of Macau's gaming market to 25 percent within the next year.

"We are submitting plans for another 3,600-room property next to Four Seasons. We hope to move some dirt around ... put in pillage before the end of this year," Adelson said, referring to Parcel 3, a plot of land already allocated to the group.

It would take between 24 and 44 months to build.

His application for land sites 7 and 8, where he had planned to build more gaming properties on Macau's Cotai strip, was rejected by the Macau government in 2010 after the group had invested around $160 million on the site. He said he was in talks with the government about potential modifications the company would have to go through.

It has been far from a smooth journey in Macau for Adelson, who was born into a Jewish immigrant family in Boston and started work by selling newspapers on street corners.

He is embroiled in a number of lawsuits, including one with Steve Jacobs, ex-head of Sands' Macau operations, who is suing for breach of contract and is working with the U.S. government on corruption investigations involving Sands China.

Shares in Sands China were down 3 percent, lagging a 1.2 percent drop in the main Hong Kong index.

Macau, the only place where Chinese nationals are legally allowed to gamble in casinos, said gambling revenue surged 24.4 percent in March to 25 billion patacas ($3.1 billion), in line with forecasts.

Tyson on Zimmerman: 'It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet'

Tyson (Isaac Brekken/AP)

Mike Tyson thinks that George Zimmerman deserves violent retribution for the shooting of Trayvon Martin.

In an interview with Yahoo News about his upcoming one-man show in Las Vegas, the former heavyweight champion sounded off on the polarizing case:

"My personal feeling is that, as a young kid that was beat on by a bully, that was pretty much singled out?the guy [Zimmerman] stalked him, didn't follow instructions from a superior officer, when they said, 'Stop following the kid.' That tells you everything right there. But my all-around perspective, I wasn't there, I don't know what happened. But it's just so widespread and overt what happened. Even though this is the best country in the world, certain laws in this country are a disgrace to a nation of savages. It's a majority versus a minority. That's the way God planned it. He didn't want to do something about it, He wanted us to do something about it. And if we don't, it's gonna stay this way. We have to continue tweeting, we have to continue marching, we have to continue fighting for Trayvon Martin. If that's not the case, he was killed in vain, and we're just waiting for it to happen to our children. He'll have gotten away with impunity. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been dragged out of his house and tied to a car and taken away. That's the only kind of retribution that people like that understand. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet. Forget about him being arrested--the fact that he hasn't been shot yet is a disgrace. That's how I feel personally about it."

In 1992, Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington, a beauty pageant contestant, and served three years in prison.

Facebook to?purchase Instagram for $1 billion

Justin Sullivan / Getty Images

In this photo illustration, the photo-sharing app Instagram fan page is seen on the Facebook website on the Apple Safari web browser. Facebook Inc. is acquiring photo-sharing app Instagram for approx. $1 billion.

By Patrick Rizzo

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a website with a boatload of pictures is now worth $1 billion.

That is the price Facebook agreed to pay for Instagram, a less-than two-year-old company that makes a wildly popular mobile photography application.

"I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook,"?Facebook's head honcho Mark Zuckerberg?said in a posting on Facebook (where else?) Monday.

Facebook, which is busy planning an initial public offering that could value the social networking site at more than $100 billion, will pay a combination of cash and stock for Instagram, Reuters reported.?Based in San Francisco, Instagram has about a dozen?employees. The deal is expected to close by June 30.

"For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests, Zuckerberg said in his Facebook post.

Facebook is expected to raise up to $10 billion in its IPO, which could come in May or June.

Last year, Facebook reportedly was planning to add filters and other tools to its mobile photography app to match?Instagram's popular filters, which allow users to manipulate?images to make them look old-timey and add other kinds of effects. The aim was to attract Instagram users and meet a competitive threat.

"We?re psyched to be joining Facebook and are excited to build a better Instagram for everyone," Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom?said ?in a statement.

He also promised the acquisition would not alter the Instagram experience for its approximately 30 million users.

?"The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love. You?ll still have all the same people you follow and that follow you. You?ll still be able to share to other social networks. And you?ll still have all the other features that make the app so fun and unique,"?Systrom?said.

Last week, Instagram made the long-awaited announcement that its app was available for?users who run Google's Android on their smartphones.?Prior to that it was only available on iPhones.?The Android app?reportedly nabbed about 1 million downloads in the first?24 hours.?

The acquisition was a strategic departure for Facebook, which until now has been content with?buying startups on the cheap for their talent.?Instagram will run as an independent app with its own brand.?

Market Day: Instagram CEO could get $400 million in Facebook deal

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users,"? Zuckerberg said. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."

Since?Instagram's founding in the autumn of 2010, it has gathered about $50 million in venture funding. That includes about $500,000 in seed?investment?in March 2010 from Andreesen Horowitz and Baseline Ventures, according to the website Crunchbase.?

Last year the company raised another $7 million, and this year the company just closed a $50 million round of funding that valued the company at $500 million, according to TechCrunch, meaning those investors virtually doubled their money overnight.

Shopping Lists & Product Reviews: New Beginnings

New Beginnings

.

Thanks for the guest post by Jonathan Curtis

My friend, Laura, is going through a divorce. She has been married for thirty years and has really never lived alone. Even when her kids went off to college, her husband was home most nights, except when on business trips. Laura and Joe married after college and started their family a few years later. To add to this life changing time in her life, Laura also just retired from teaching. She is a grandmother and her grandchildren live out of town, so she will be able to visit them whenever she wants to now. Her daughter has assured her that she is welcome to visit whenever she needs reinforcement through grandchildren hugs and kisses. She and I talked about changes she can make in her home to give her a new start feeling. We discussed alarm systems to make her feel safer now that she will there alone at night. We talked about painting the walls, rearranging the furniture, definitely taking down some family pictures that include Joe. She will be okay. She has a great support system in her good friends and family.

Top Marriage Advice Blog, RockinMarriage.com, Announces ...

RockingMarriage.com offers married couples the latest tips and advice for keeping their passions alive. The blog?s creators, Ed and Cathy Lorient, today announce their alternative view on the rise of televised relationships, marriages and divorce.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) April 02, 2012

RockinMarriage.com is quickly becoming one of the world?s most read marriage advice blogs. Offering daily tips and advice for married couples across the globe, information can be read directly from their blog, or via a daily digest email.

In their latest blog post, Ed and Cathy Lorient discuss the influx of relationship-based television. The new blog post is titled, ?What does the Kardashian Divorce say about the Value of Marriage??

The blog post can be accessed here:

http://rockinmarriage.com/what-does-the-kardashian-divorce-say-about-the-valu...

Kicking off their latest blog post, Cathy touches on the recent news that Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce just 72 hours after getting married. A new Huffington Post article says that the Kardashian divorce, like their marriage, may become a televised event.

?Kardashian has gotten a great deal of backlash from the public, the media and other celebrities because of her supposed attempts to sell her brand by building up to a wedding and then filing for divorce 72 hours later? says Cathy.

Cathy then claims that some people may believe that divorce is ?just a publicity stunt?.

The blog post then proceeds to note concern that a lot of television these days has turned romance into drama, detracting from the true value of marriage, love and relationships.

?If the people growing up on these shows grow up feeling that marriage is a temporary situation and one that can be entered into on a whim, then we?ll certainly see those divorce statistics rise? Cathy adds.

Following this, Cathy makes a point that if people watch reality shows, they should also keep themselves in check. She makes the point that, if shows like this continue, will it make everyone believe that it is okay to marry two, three or more times on a whim?

?We also need to talk to our kids about the way marriage and divorce is portrayed on TV and in the movies today. Kids don?t start out thinking divorce is an accepted solution to boredom or differences, they learn that it is? Cathy concludes.

In Tulsa, a community steps up after shootings

Two men suspected of killing three African Americans and wounding two were arrested Sunday morning north of Tulsa, Okla. NBC's Charles Hadlock reports.

By Isolde Raftery, msnbc.com

On Friday morning, the residents of Tulsa?s predominantly black north side woke to mayhem: Five people had been shot in their neighborhood, apparently at random. Three were dead. The shooters, they learned, were at large.

They feared leaving their homes and worried they couldn?t make it to church on Easter Sunday. Witnesses hesitated to call police, anxious they would be called snitches.

Tulsa police Maj. Walter Evans was charged with forming a task force to track down the shooters. He appealed to the press, asking them to spread the word that the police department had opened a Crime Stoppers tip line. Nearly 40 tips came in.

?In my 23 years I?ve never seen a crime as heinous as this, but I?ve also never seen such an outpouring of support from the community,? Evans said later.

One Tulsa shooting suspect posted racist remark on Facebook

Police learned of a young man named Jake England, a 19-year-old whose father had been killed two years before, almost to the day. Carl England had been shot by an African-American man during a scuffle, and England, it appeared from a posting Thursday on his Facebook wall, had an ax to grind.

?Today is two years that my dad has been gone shot by a?f------ n----- it's hard not to go off between that and sheran I'm gone in the head,? he wrote, according to the Tulsa World. ??

Sheran was Sheran Hart Wilde, England?s fianc?e, who killed herself in January. Susan Sevenstar, an England family friend, told the Associated Press that the couple had an infant and that England wasn?t in his right mind.

His roommate, a 32-year-old man named Alvin Lee Watts who liked to take shirtless photos of himself, replied to England's post: ?I kno i miss them 2. My last meomeries were great ones of them. Its nt goodbye its c u later.? Watts was recently single, according to his posts on the social network site, and frustrated by people he described as ?haterz.?

Watts and England were roommates, and Watts, it appeared on Facebook, had supported England as he grieved. In one post, Watts wrote, ?Me n my bro jake jus chill?in. jake putting lil jake 2 sleep. Watch?in country videos.?

On Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday, police allege that the two men hit the streets of north Tulsa in a white Chevrolet pickup with a loud exhaust. Witnesses told police that a white man in the truck stopped pedestrians for directions and then shot them in the back as they walked away. It is unclear who pulled the trigger.

Their victims, identified as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Allen, 31, were black.

That night, England returned to Facebook: ?Chilling at that house people talking s--- on me for some s--- I didn't do ... it just mite be the time to call it quits I I hate to say it like that but I'm done if something does happen tonite be ready for another funeral later.?

By Saturday afternoon, the police were desperate for leads. They asked the press to spread the word that they were opening a Crime Stoppers hot line. Within two hours, the tips flooded in. Maj. Evans set up Operation Random Shooter.

They recovered a weapon and found England?s burned pickup 10 miles from his home. Within hours, one tipster pointed them to the suspects.

Tulsa police Chief Chuck Jordan said a helicopter tracked them to a house in Turley, Okla., a city of 3,000 people north of Tulsa, where they were arrested. They are being held on three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

When Council Member Jack Henderson, who represents north Tulsa, got the call about their arrests, he dropped to his knees to pray. ?Thank God,? he said. He said he believes the police department has proved itself to the black community, and that his constituents may start coming forward with tips to solve dormant cases.

Neither Watts or England has previously been?convicted of a serious crime. Court records show that Watts was charged in 2009 with aggravated assault and battery, but those charges were dismissed. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for domestic violence. He paid a $649.90 court fine.

England has been charged once, for driving with a suspended license. ?

Now the investigation turns to whether Watts and England should be charged with hate crimes.

?If we did have a case, if someone was obviously engaged in a hate crime, we need to show the community that?s what we charge them for,? Chief Jordan said.

But Sevenstar, the England family friend, insisted to the AP that this was not a hate crime, adding that England was Cherokee Indian.

"He didn't care what your color was,? she said. ?It wasn't a racist thing.?

Home Improvement Projects Start Small | Oak Homes

Post navigation

? Previous Next ?

Most people are about 90% satisfied with their home. For that small 10% though the urge to make adjustments and changes to their property have some homeowners doing projects that can make their house more appealing and livable. Home improvement projects often start out in one room and spread throughout the house. Working to make a house more livable for the family and meet the demands of each individual, the renovation projects that are contracted by professionals allow a homeowner to have exactly what they want from their house when all the work is done. By starting out small and doing simple improvements many homeowners are able to manage their schedule of changes and improvements throughout their home.

One way to start out making changes to the exterior of the house without disrupting the daily routine of the family is to install replacement windows. San Diego homeowners that are looking to increase their energy efficiency and lower their air conditioning costs have found that by using vinyl windows, San Diego property values have increased somewhat. With low E windows that have a high R value the resale market for homes has shown improvement. But most people just enjoy the benefit of having their house be more energy efficient with their window upgrade.

Once the windows have been brought in a number of homeowners chose to continue their treatment of the house by purchasing complimenting sliding glass doors that are matched to the vinyl windows and also provide a cost savings on the utility bills. With greater efficiency inside their dwelling many people go on to add new lighting fixtures and other small touches to their homes that can enhance the style of their living space.

For those that are more aggressive in their renovation strategy, the tearing down of walls and remodeling of the kitchen leads them to change out the floor plan of their house and create a space that is perfect for entertaining guest and preparing meals. With an addition to the kitchen the opportunity to add new windows that allow more light into the home or a set of stylish French doors give San Diego homeowners a more appealing place to live that is customized to their standards. Whether it is just making a home more energy efficient or doing a few renovations within the property many San Diego homeowners are finding that with the right touches to their windows and doors they have a beautiful house that looks great from the neighborhood and is practical and functional for them and their family.
