Deck/Patio Repair and Maintenance Tips ? Premier Remodels

For many American homeowners, the early weeks of summer are an invitation to take the party out to the backyard patio or deck. Before you haul out the grill and light the tiki torches, however, take some time to do a little preventive repair and?maintenance.

  • First ? complete a thorough inspection of the entire structure to ensure that it is safe and secure. Check for loose nails and screws, and either replace them or re-tighten them. Tighten any railings that have become loose during the winter.
  • Second ? look beneath the deck to confirm that beams and support poles remain in good working order. If you find structural components that are loose, rotten or out of position, for your own safety, quit using the deck and call a pro in to fix the problem.

As an additional safety precaution, replace broken or rotten deck boards before they break through completely. Boards that have become bowed or warped will also need to be replaced because they hold water and make the deck surface uneven, and create another potential safety hazard. If you?re replacing those boards with pressure-treated lumber, maximize the life of your deck by using stainless steel or high-grade galvanized fasteners designed to combat the corrosive effects of modern lumber treatment chemicals.

Once everything is secure, clean the deck boards with a biodegradable deck cleaner to remove dirt, mildew and algae. These environmentally friendly solvents are now commonly available and actually perform better than previously popular outdoor wood cleaners such as bleach. Even if your deck is made from a composite material, most manufacturers still recommend a thorough annual cleaning. During the cleaning process, also take a little time to sand down any spots that have become rough or splintered.

If the deck appears to need a lot of repair, please consider having the deck surface and railing replaced with new maintenance free composite material. Normally the structure and framing of the deck is in good shape which will allow for a simple re-facing of the deck surface. This will not only enhance the living space but resale value is a premium.

For more information and any questions feel free to take a picture of your deck and send it to Shannon@premierremodels.com and we will be happy to return some added suggestions for repair and replacement options.

US Army more selective on recruits, re-enlistments

(AP) ? Uncle Sam may not want you after all.

In sharp contrast to the peak years of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the Army last year took in no recruits with misconduct convictions or drug or alcohol issues, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press. And soldiers already serving on active duty now must meet tougher standards to stay on for further tours in uniform.

The Army is also spending hundreds of thousands of dollars less in bonuses to attract recruits or entice soldiers to remain.

It's all part of an effort to slash the size of the active duty Army from about 570,000 at the height of the Iraq war to 490,000 by 2017. The cutbacks began last year, and as of the end of March the Army was down to less than 558,000 troops.

For a time during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army lowered its recruiting standards, raising the number of recruits who entered the Army with moral, medical and criminal ? including felony ? waivers.

Recruits with misdemeanors, which could range from petty theft and writing bad checks to assault, were allowed into the Army, as well as those with some medical problems or low aptitude scores that might otherwise have disqualified them.

A very small fraction of recruits had waivers for felonies, which included convictions for manslaughter, vehicular homicide, robbery and a handful of sex crimes. The sex crimes often involved consensual sex when one of the individuals was under 18.

In 2006, about 20 percent of new Army recruits came in under some type of waiver, and by the next year it had grown to nearly three in 10. After the Defense Department issued new guidelines, the percentage needing waivers started to come down in 2009.

Now, as the Army moves to reduce its force, some soldiers will have to leave.

Officials say they hope to make cuts largely through voluntary attrition. But Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff, has warned that as much as 35 percent of the cuts will be "involuntary" ones that force soldiers to abandon what they had hoped would be long military careers.

"This is going to be hard," said Gen. David Rodriguez, head of U.S. Army Forces Command. "This is tough business. As we increase things like re-enlistment standards, some of the people who were able to re-enlist three years ago won't be able to re-enlist again."

The Army, in an internal slide presentation, is blunt: "Re-enlistment is a privilege, not a right; some 'fully qualified' soldiers will be denied re-enlistment due to force realignment requirements and reductions in end strength."

In a memo earlier this year, Army Secretary John McHugh laid out more stringent criteria for denying re-enlistment, including rules that would turn away soldiers who have gotten a letter of reprimand for a recent incident involving the use of drugs or alcohol, or some soldiers who were unable to qualify for a promotion list.

"It's all focused on allowing us ... to retain only those soldiers who have the right skills, the right attributes and who help us meet the requirements and are those soldiers which truly have the greatest potential," said Army Brig. Gen. Richard P. Mustion, the Army's director of military personnel management.

Last year, as the budget and personnel cuts began to take hold, just a bit more than 10 percent of Army recruits needed waivers to join. The bulk of those ? about 7 percent ? were medical waivers, which can include poor eyesight that can be corrected. About 3 percent were for misconduct that did not involve convictions.

The decline in recent years was almost entirely on conduct waivers, not medical. As an example, there were 189 recruits with "major misconduct" waivers last year, and none with criminal convictions, compared to 546 misconduct waivers in 2009 and 220 with convictions.

Mustion said that as Army recruiters look at the applicants coming in they "are truly able to identify the very best soldiers, future soldiers, and those who display the greatest potential."

He said they are evaluating each one on his physical, academic and aptitude test performances "and, quite frankly, would they require a waiver to come into the military versus the next soldier who has the same credentials but wouldn't require a waiver."

Waivers have long been a source of debate. Military officials have defended the process, saying it allows good people who once made a minor mistake to enlist. But mid-level officers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan also told top defense officials that the dramatic rise in the number of bad-behavior waivers was a problem, that they were often spending too much time on "problem children."

. Steven Dale Green, a former 101st Airborne Division soldier, came into the Army on a morals waiver because of an earlier problem with drugs. He is now serving five life terms for killing an Iraqi family and raping and killing the 14-year-old daughter in March 2006.

With the economy struggling, it's still a recruit-rich environment. But Army officials worry that as the economy gets better, they may not get all the high quality recruits they need, and their best soldiers may decide not to re-enlist because they may do better in the corporate world.

For now, however, the Army is saving money in the process.

According to Mustion, soldiers in just six types of jobs are getting bonuses when they enlist: interpreter/translators, divers, cryptologic linguists, medical laboratory specialists and explosive ordnance disposal specialists. And those bonuses average about $3,300-$3,500, he said.

That is a steep drop from the $16,000-$18,000 bonuses the Army was paying on average to new recruits in 2007-08. In the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2008, the Army paid nearly $860,000 in enlistment bonuses, compared to just $77,000 in the 2011 fiscal year.

Re-enlistment bonuses for soldiers now average about $7,500-$7,700.

Military leaders say the key goal is to shape the force as they cut, winnowing out not only the lesser qualified, but keeping the right number of soldiers in critical jobs and all across the ranks, particularly the mid-level officers.

"We need to keep the right balance," said Rodriguez. "We don't want a well-modernized force with no personnel that are trained."

The Army, he said, "can build a young soldier quickly, but we can't build a major and a sergeant quickly. So we have to figure out the right ratios as we move forward, and we have to be able to expand if we need to."

Free Paid Surveys ? Are They Really Worth ... - home business blog

There?s a lot of buzz on the internet surrounding free paid surveys. Amidst all of the buzz and the claims of people making a decent income on the side from taking cash surveys, many people are still skeptical about earning money for giving their opinion. They wonder if it?s really worth the time investment and don?t believe that a fair amount of income can truly be earned.

When it comes to making money online, it?s OK to be skeptical. In fact, I don?t blame the skeptics. Why? Because much of the income claims we see about people making money online from surveys is usually highly dramatic and untrue. So, if you thought you would really make $10,000 this month for sharing your opinion on one paid survey, I?m sorry ? it just won?t happen; however, it doesn?t mean that you can?t earn a decent income on the side.

The key to earning money with free paid surveys is that you need to be realistic about your earnings. Most survey companies pay anywhere from $1 to $10 or more per survey that you take. While it doesn?t sound like much money, if you sign up with enough companies and spread yourself out, the money really does add up! If you have a little free time on your hands and need something to do, why not earn a few bucks for some stupidly simple work? Sure, you?re not going to make millions, but you can earn a few hundred dollars each and every month just for sharing your opinion. If you ask me, that sounds like one heck of an opportunity.

So, if you?re on the fence about free paid surveys, you might want to jump off and jump in and get started. Go with the most legitimate market research companies and you?ll be in good hands. Plus, your bank account will thank you for the extra income. Trust me ? it?s worth it!

Motorola skipping Ice Cream Sandwich for some devices, worries it'll make them fat

Despite Motorola's Android 4.0 rollout schedule, not every one of the manufacturer's devices are ready for dessert -- some, the outfit says, will be put on a diet. "Obviously we want the new release to improve our devices," the company said in a recent blog post, "If we determine that can't be done, well, then we're not able to upgrade that particular device." Handsets that are bogged down by Ice Cream Sandwich simply won't get an update. Even so, Motorola affirms that it's working closely with Google to keep its hardware up to date.

Domestic violence - Blogs - IndusLadies

There is enormous amount of domestic violence that takes place throughout the world and it is always women and children who are the sufferers of this cruelty caused by a human being to a fellow human beings. While women?s rights organizations are fighting against all oppression of women all over the world, mostly it is addressing discrimination against women in communities, employment opportunities, etc. Most of the domestic violence incidents go unreported as women don?t come forward to report worrying about their marital status. In some cases, other women contribute to the domestic violence. While education was the root cause of such domestic violence in eastern civilization, the one up attitude appears to be the reason in western civilization. Arguments among the spouses are healthy as long as it remains within the territory of differences of opinion. When it becomes verbal or physical abuses, it crosses that border. No human being has a right to verbally or physically abuse a fellow being, leave alone using it against the spouse.

The root causes of domestic violence vary and include a) differences in principles, b) expectations not being met, c) complex experienced by a spouse, d) third party?s interference in a smooth relationship between spouses and e) attitude of control over women. When girl children are raised, the parents need to focus on building their character that include traits such as a) humble but fearless attitude, b) ability to defend the righteousness, c) constructive relationship building focused on mutual and unconditional love with no strings attached, d) understand the difference between elderly advice and interference in a relationship and e) self-confidence driven by self-respect.

There has to be a clear understanding that mutual respect is an essential ingredient for the spousal relationship to thrive and the women?s liberation should begin at home.

I Don't Love My Children More than My Husband. | Kid Scoop

love this guy.1 296x300 Why I Dont Love My Children More than My Husband

11 years and still ticking...

Have you read the DDB study about Mother?s Day? There?s several things the life style study found but the one that has gotten the most attention is the fact that 75% of mothers admit to loving their children more than their husbands. I admit to being in the 25%, not in that I love my husband more than my kids, but I certainly don?t love one more than the other. More so, the love I feel for each of them is dramatically different yet both overpowering and sometimes frightening. I can see the validity in other mothers? arguments that husbands can leave but children always remain with you, but I grew up in a home with a single working mom, my relationship pretty much stalled out with her around 15 and I moved out shorty after my 17th birthday as an independent minor. Yes, husbands can leave, but so can kids.

I had been married about a year when I got into an argument with a friend about the fact that I had complete faith in my new marriage and my new husband. ?How can you KNOW he won?t leave?? she argued. ?I have to have faith that he won?t or I?ll spend everyday a wreck wondering if tomorrow is the day he doesn?t come home.? I?ve never worried about him leaving, there was a time I considered leaving (and I?ve written extensively about that on my own blog) but in the end we were both able to make it through, stronger than we ever were in our first eight years of marriage. We were both willing to work on our relationship and fight for us, things would have turned out much differently had one of us not been 100% committed. It?s scary to give every bit of trust you have to another person but it has proven to be the best relationship I?ve ever had.

I have numerous friends with much older children who have admitted to the fear they feel that when their youngest packs up and leaves for college, they?ll be left with a roommate whom they barely know who also happens to be their husband, their kids have been their whole life and suddenly their whole life is moving away to start new lives of their own and they are left in an empty house with a relative stranger. I refuse to let that happen.

I look at my relationship with my husband the same way I look at my relationship with my own parents and my own children, I?m never going to give up on any of them. I don?t care how strained one of them may become or how distant we may be, I?m not going anywhere. I?ve been welcomed back as the prodigal daughter into my own family without question and I?ve rectified some difficult relationships with my own parents in recent years, they are my family and I cannot and will not give up on them. I?ve seen moms do some crazy stuff for some of their crazy kids and I fully expect to be doing the same things as my girls grow. (I should clarify here that as the wife of an attorney I?ve heard tales of many moms who walk their kids through some very hairy legal situations, I?m of the firm belief that there is a difference between hand holding and supporting. My mom always said that if I ever got arrested I?d be spending the night in jail but I?d always have a bed to come home to when I got out. That kind of love served me well (as it it convinced me very well to never get arrested because I knew I was on my own.))

Back to my husband, unlike family I chose to love him, there have been some days when we have both had to remind ourselves that we choose to love each other and sometimes that choice isn?t considered as strong as blood, but we made people. We made new people bonded by blood and if that doesn?t knit us together forever I?m not sure what ever could. I promised him that I would stick by him for time and all eternity and he promised me the same, in a world where promises don?t mean much anymore we?ve been able to keep ours because we both choose to. I haven?t always been the best wife and at times he wasn?t the husband I needed, but neither of us has given up on the other.

I am able to be the parent I am because I have him as a partner. He?s able to fulfill his responsibilities because I do my best to support him as well. While we?re not codependent on each other we both do better out in the world knowing there?s someone back at home who makes us the best possible people we can be. It?s not a guarantee, but it?s a pretty good bet that someday our kids are going to move out leaving us where we started, just the two of us, madly in love, leaving our socks in the middle of the living room floor, and spots all over the bathroom mirror. We realize that it takes moments away from our kids to foster our relationship but it?s worth it for us. I could never say my husband is ?just an accessory? or that ?I only like him for the sake of our kids.? It was assumed that women who didn?t love their children more than their husbands were ?young teens or drug using moms.? There was also a debate that the question ?Who do you love more?? wasn?t clear.

Who do you love more when it comes to saving one or the other out of a burning building? That?s not really a valid question, the truth is Cody is going to be more capable of getting himself out than Addie or Vivi so obviously most moms (me included) are going to go for saving the littles, it?s not because we love them more than each other, we just know what our spouse is capable of.

Many of my friends have been hurt by men, my own mom included, and I can understand their answers and the trust issues. However, not all men are lifelong jerks, not all men abandon their families and not all men are liars and cheats, this is where I believe the 25% comes in. It?s not that we?re all drug addicts or young moms, some of us just can?t straight up say we love our kids more than we love our husbands. While I may not love Cody more, I certainly don?t love him any less and recognize the situation I?m in as a very good one for myself and a very good environment for our kids to grow up in.

my family Why I Dont Love My Children More than My Husband

I have several friends who grew up in homes where it was apparent their mother loved them more than their father and that they were only staying together for their children, while I can?t personally speak to the intricacies of growing up in such a situation I can say that it has devastated several of my friends to have their parents divorce after they move out or damaged relationships because of the example laid down by their own parents. My parents divorced when I was very young and my mom divorced for a second time several years ago from someone who came to mean a lot to me in my life. As a young child it?s hard to understand why your parents just can?t get along yet as a grownup it?s equally as hard to see your parents as flawed individuals who make mistakes and struggle in relationships. Had my parents stayed together for my sister and myself we would have never had the influence of my step mom, which I?ve documented as being one of the best influences in my life. I may be grown with children now but it still means a lot to me that I can go home and see my parents happy with the people they chose to be with years after my sister and I left.

I wear my heart on my sleeve in love, which means I love with all that I have but it hurts exponentially more when things go wrong. I encourage people who are in a difficult relationship to fight with with all they have to save it, but at the same time realize that they as individuals are worth fighting for and if their partner isn?t fighting for them? It may not be worth the heartache.

(I should also state that my husband is not my best friend, he is my husband. In the words of my friend Angie ?Asking your spouse to be your partner, lover, roommate, co-chair and your bestie is just too much for one person to handle. ?And if, God forbid, anything ever happens in your marriage, it?s going to be really awkward crying and sharing a pint of ice cream with your ex-spouse/best friend.? but that?s a post for another day, this one has gone on long enough.)

Hundreds Turnout For Children's Cancer Research Walk ? CBS Philly

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Some 500 people participated in Philadelphia?s first ?cure search? walk. The walk is a fundraiser for children?s cancer research.

Jared Bender has been through more, at nine-years-old, than many adults ever will go through. Jared is a survivor of Ewing?s sarcoma. Forty years ago, that cancer was a death sentence for the children and teenagers it afflicts.

Now, survival rates are 60 to 80 percent, because of the very research that inspired Jared to join in the one mile walk around Franklin Square on Sunday.

?I hope it raises a lot of money and I also hope a lot of people get better.?

Organizers say children?s cancers get the least research funding, because they are the rarest, but for parents who?ve lost a child, that idea is an abstraction.

Tim Court?s seven-year-old son Christopher died of a brain tumor in October.

?There really is nothing they can do at the moment for brain tumors so, that?s why we?re supporting this and it?s amazing. If we were just asking for donations, I don?t think it would have been the same but because it?s a big event, it?s worked out very well.?
