After surviving those old Celtics, LeBron James and the Heat get the Thunder's young guns in the NBA finals.

Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the rest of the Western Conference champions will host Game 1 on Tuesday night when the NBA's championship series comes to Oklahoma City for the first time.

The Thunder finally got their opponent Saturday night when the Heat finished off the Celtics with a 101-88 victory in Game 7, sending Miami to its second straight finals berth and giving James a third attempt at his first ring.

James had 31 points and 12 rebounds to set up a marquee matchup with Durant, the NBA's scoring champion whom he beat out for the league's MVP award.

"I'm looking forward to going against him," James said.

James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh fell short in their first season together, losing in six games to Dallas last year. The Heat earned another chance by winning the final two games against the Celtics, whose older legs might have run out of steam after Boston led the decisive game by seven at halftime.

Energy won't be a problem for the Thunder, whose core of 23-year-old Durant, the league's three-time scoring champion, Westbrook (23) and James Harden (22) was born when the Celtics' Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce was around middle school age.

The Thunder, who moved to Oklahoma City in 2008, roll into their franchise's first finals appearance since the Seattle SuperSonics lost to Chicago in 1996. They surged past San Antonio by winning the final four games after dropping the first two to the No. 1 seed.

After eliminating defending champion Dallas and the Lakers in the first two rounds, the Thunder look to knock out another heavyweight in the Heat, the 2006 NBA champions.

"We all know how tough it's going to be but we're going to fight to the end no matter what, leave it out on floor and we'll live with the results," Durant said.

The Thunder will host the first two games before the series moves to Miami for Games 3-5.

Despite their youth, the Thunder have some finals experience. Starting center Kendrick Perkins played in two finals with the Celtics against the Lakers, both times against teammate Derek Fisher.

"Once you get to the finals, it's just about will and heart," Perkins said. "You could do all the scouting that you want to do and try to get ready for them, but at the end of the day, you done worked so hard to get here that it's just coming from within. You've just got to dig deep.

"By Game 4 or 5, you'll see guys getting tired because of the season being long or whatever. It's just digging deep and seeing who wants it more."

The teams split a pair of meetings during the regular season, each winning at home.

Drive toward U.S. fiscal cliff takes election detour

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If ever there was a case for putting off until tomorrow what could be done today, the deeply divided U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama probably have solid ones when it comes to the "fiscal cliff" they face.

It's not that all 535 members of Congress and the Obama administration are sitting around, twiddling their thumbs until after the November 6 elections, especially with a scary European economic crisis threatening U.S. growth.

On any given day, a stroll through the halls of Congress will find lawmakers huddling with each other or with outside officials to discuss the December 31 expiration of Bush-era tax cuts, the January 1 roll out of deep, automatic spending cuts and the early 2013 need to raise U.S. borrowing authority or risk default.

These "gangs" of deficit-hawk lawmakers have been meeting informally for more than a year with little result.

"It's the bridesmaid group - always left at the altar," said Ethan Siegal, who heads The Washington Exchange, a firm that advises institutional investors on U.S. politics.

The problem, it seems, is that "they can bring interesting, pragmatic and actually reasonable policy ideas to the table, but they don't bring political juice to the table," Siegal said.

The missing "juice" would be the backing of the top four leaders - Republican and Democratic - of the House and Senate.

The gangs play a role nonetheless. Members believe Congress needs to be prepared for what is coming, and the loosely formed groups of lawmakers want to get legislation ready so it can be pulled off the shelf when needed.

Nobody doubts the enormity of the task, as congressional aides commonly refer with dread to the six months worth of work they will have to jam into a six-week "lame duck" post-election work session.

So, as long as interest rates for borrowers remain low and the U.S. economy avoids a nosedive this summer and early autumn, there are plenty of reasons - most of them political - for Democrats and Republicans to cool their heels and await the voters' verdict before engaging in the hard bargaining that is certain to produce results at the end of this year.

STICKING TO TALKING POINTS

A look at dueling remarks on Friday by Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner leaves little doubt that serious negotiating is nowhere at hand.

"Given the signs of weakness in world economies, not just in Europe but also some softening in Asia, it's critical that we take the actions we can to strengthen the American economy right now," Obama warned at a press conference.

He then rattled off a list of must-do jobs programs and other stimulus steps that Republicans rejected months ago.

About an hour later, Boehner countered that "We have time to deal with this." He then fell back on long-held talking points: "If you want to create more certainty for employers, let's extend the tax rates, let's stop the regulatory onslaught, and let's deal with our debt."

Amid all the breathless pronouncements on Capitol Hill about the "fiscal cliff," some senators do take a deep breath and advise a go-slow approach.

"Most of us believe the reality is that unless there is a real crisis that affects things in a big way, probably the time (to act) is after the election," said Republican Senator Bob Corker, a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee.

Corker was one of a number of senators from both parties who heard a blunt assessment of global economic worries from New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley and World Bank chief Robert Zoellick during a closed-door meeting at the Capitol on Tuesday.

WHY WORRY?

The European crisis and poor U.S. jobs numbers last month weighed on U.S. stock prices earlier this week and helped push interest rates to fresh lows. But by mid-week the mood on Wall Street was more upbeat and a big upward swing in stock prices kept any talk of early compromise on tax and spending issues at bay.

When asked whether an economic crisis in Europe could force Congress to act sooner rather than later to avoid the fiscal cliff looming at the end of the year, Democratic Senator Max Baucus noted that the stock market was up more than 200 points that day. "What's the worry," he said.

It was a tongue-in-cheek response by the powerful Senate Finance Committee chairman, but it reflected the general feeling by financial analysts and lawmakers that as long as the U.S. economy stays out of trouble, there is no reason to move from fixed political positions and compromise ahead of the election.

Enough cannot be said about hardball political calculations driving an end-of-year deal and not sooner.

* Last summer's debt limit/deficit-reduction negotiation between Obama and House Republicans ended in so much bitterness and mistrust that the two sides refuse to engage each other with their jobs on the line on November 6.

* If Obama wins re-election, he knows he'll be in a better bargaining position than he is now to win a long-term increase in Treasury Department borrowing authority, possibly averting the tortured negotiations Republicans put him through in 2011.

* If Obama is defeated, his administration could probably delay any debt-limit showdown until after Romney takes office in January 2013, leaving the new president to thrash out a resolution with the small-government Tea Party wing of his own party.

* Victor or vanquished, Obama will still be president on December 31, 2012, when the Bush tax cuts expire. Either way, he's in a position to dare Republicans to jeopardize tax cuts for moderate-income voters in order to preserve the tax cuts for the wealthy.

* Republicans, increasingly confident that they will win the White House and possibly take control of the Senate, also want to wait until after the elections to cut a deal. They would have far more leverage at that point to push for maintaining all of the tax cuts and diverting planned spending cuts away from the Pentagon and toward domestic programs.

"What we'll do before the election is create a fertile ground for the next president, number one, and number two work on our own proposals that we can suggest," Republican Senator Lamar Alexander said.

Physicists Invent First Tabletop X-Ray Source

tabletop xray, physicists, medcal technology, x-ray Image: T. Popmintchev & B. Baxley/JILA/Univ. Colorado

From Nature magazine

The pressurized, cylindrical chamber fits in the palm of Margaret Murnane?s hand. Yet out of one end of the device comes an X-ray beam that packs almost as much punch as the light generated by massive particle accelerators.

Murnane and Henry Kapteyn, both physicists at JILA in Boulder, Colorado, a joint institute of the University of Colorado and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, have reported the first tabletop source of ultra-short, laser-like pulses of low energy, or ?soft?, X-rays. The light, capable of probing the structure and dynamics of molecules, was previously available only at large, billion-dollar national facilities such as synchrotrons or free-electron lasers, where competition for use of the equipment is fierce. But the report by Murnane, Kapteyn and their colleagues, published in the 8 June issue of Science (T.?Popmintchev et al. Science 336, 1287?1291; 2012), suggests that the devices might soon lie within the grasp of a university laboratory budget. ?For us, it?s incredible that we can do this at all in a tabletop system,? says Murnane. ?Three years ago, people would have said ?only large facilities can do that?.?

Murnane and Kapteyn, a husband-and-wife team who also head the Boulder-based company KMLabs, already sell a similar tabletop source of extreme-ultraviolet light. Murnane thinks that a future soft X-ray source should cost about US$1 million, and hopes that its relatively low cost and small size will open up X-ray studies for materials scientists, biologists and others. The beams generated by the device could, for instance, help materials scientists to make better solar materials by tracking the paths of electrons through solar cells, and might allow chemists to trace the ultrafast dynamics of photo?synthesis and catalysis. ?This is something people have been waiting for for a very long time,? says Oleg Shpyrko, a physicist at the University of California, San Diego. Shpyrko often waits months to get his experiments accepted at the Advanced Photon Source, a synchrotron at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, and must then fly his students halfway across the country to do the work.

The tabletop sources rely on a technique called high-harmonic generation, in which laser light is passed through a medium that converts it to light of shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies. Shine a ruby laser into a quartz crystal, for example, and a beam of ultraviolet light comes out ? albeit dimmer, but still focused like a laser beam.

Murnane and Kapteyn have pushed high-harmonic generation to its limits, with a system that uses an infrared laser as the source and pressurized helium gas as the medium. The laser creates a strong electric field, which draws electrons away from the helium atoms, allowing the electrons to absorb energy from the electric field. When they slam back in to the helium atoms, they release that absorbed energy as shorter-wavelength photons ? but only about one photon comes out for every 5,000 infrared photons that are put in.

The result is light at wavelengths almost as short as those delivered by synchrotrons. By increasing the pressure in the gas ? something theorists thought might defocus the light beam ? Murnane and Kapteyn can produce light with a wavelength of 0.8 nanometres. Around these wavelengths, many of the chemical elements used in magnets and superconductors absorb a characteristic band of light. Kapteyn says that this could be used by chemists to discern the spin states of nickel atoms that make up the bits of information in magnetic computer hard drives, for example.

The tabletop systems have already surpassed the larger light-source facilities in terms of laser pulse speed. Murnane and Kapteyn?s device produces very fast pulses, as short as 2.5 attoseconds (10?18 seconds) ? faster than the picosecond (10?12) pulses of synchrotrons and the femto?second (10?15) pulses of free-electron lasers. That timescale is even quicker than the making and breaking of chemical bonds. ?At this timescale, we can start using these light sources to address questions where we have no idea what the answers will be,? says Ferenc Krausz, a physicist at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, and co-founder of Femtolasers, a company that sells ultrafast light sources.
