Microsoft shows off Xbox Live on Windows 8 (video)

Yeah, we knew it was possible, but knowing and seeing are two very, very different animals. Just before closing the doors at Build 2011, Microsoft's Avi Ben-Menahem took the time to briefly showcase what would be possible with Xbox Live and Windows 8. It's obviously in a very early state, but already we're seeing signs of cross-platform multiplayer game support, and an (unsurprisingly) Metro-style universe supplanting the existing Games for Windows Live. We get the feeling that Microsoft's thinking this one through; rather than just shoehorning a gaming element in, things like "cloud saves" and dedicated Music / Video panes will be around to enjoy. Moreover, participation in the Xbox Live development program will purportedly be free, and if Ben-Menahem has his way, this will bring "everything you know and love on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live to Windows." Bold. Peek the pair of videos just after the break.

2011 Outlook ? Dallas Real Estate Market : Real Estate Apartments

Browse > Home / Marketing / 2011 Outlook ? Dallas Real Estate Market

Article by VIP Realty Platinum

Real estate broker, Harry Ridge with VIP Realty Platinum, gives his outlook for the 2011 Dallas real estate market. Ridge, in his 25th year of business knows real estate like few others. He has experienced and succeeded in all market environments from the pre-housing boom to the post housing bust. In a time of cautiousness and pessimism Ridge has an excited optimism for 2011. When asked what was the basis of his optimism he responded ?people are coming to recognize that home ownership is an investment in themselves and in their future?. Mortgage rates are at historical lows, home affordability is at all time highs and there is a lot of inventory to choose from with many great Dallas home values to be found.

When asked what do you see as the biggest challenge for the Dallas real estate market for 2011 Ridge says ?the biggest challenge for the real estate market as a whole and particularly for home buyers is the ever tightening credit markets and the inability for home buyers to obtain mortgage financing?. The Obama administration has let the nation and its taxpayers down. Our tax money and the tax money of future generations went to bail out the banks from years of overzealous lending practices with the ?understanding? that these same banks would loosen credit standards and make mortgage financing more attainable for home buyers. Raising the minimum credit score for FHA insured loans from 580 to 620 now to 640 clearly is not making mortgage financing more obtainable for home buyers. Furthermore, eliminating mortgage financing for most of the self employed isn?t going in the right direction either. It is estimated that there are more than 30 million people with a credit score under 640 and this number is increasing daily. This is a large segment of the population that will be excluded from the home buying market. When asked what should we expect in the Dallas real estate market in 2011 Ridge says ?I expect a steady increase in real estate activity from mid-February through the end of July, first from first time buyers and then into the move up markets. After that activity will level off and remain steady until the approach or the 2011 holiday season when activity will begin to wane. Also strong in the DFW (Dallas ? Fort Worth Metroplex) real estate area is the relocation market as more and more people relocate to the DFW Metroplex from all other areas of the country?. There are 300 people per day moving into the DFW Metroplex area. More interestingly, 300 people have been moving into the DFW Metroplex every day for the last 30 years. Ridge goes on to say ?The DFW Metroplex truly is the land of opportunity for those who get in front of this tidal wave of growth will do very well for themselves.? Take your time, do your due diligence and get pre-qualified for a mortgage, step up and take advantage of this time in history to own a home of your very own.

If You Have Never Had Anxiety Panic Attacks, You Cannot ...

You probably have never had anxiousness panic assaults, you possibly can?t possibly know what it is like. It stops you cold. It is the most gut wrenching, terrible feeling ever. It is kind of like the feeling of awfulness distilled. An anxiety panic assault could make a normally rational individual begin to perspire, cause their coronary heart to race, And send them working home in a panic. It can be so crippling, as a matter of fact, that it can be laborious to get help.

When I first started affected by nervousness assaults, I could not even make it to my nervousness assist group. I was becoming a shut it. Each time I would go away the home, something would set off me. Typically, it could be a routine worry. I might take into consideration whether or not I had left the stove on, for example. Soon, however, my idle fear would turn into panic. If I tried to goto nervousness help groups, I would worry about what people would take into consideration me. I would get so nervous that I would not even find a way to make it all the best way there. Soon, I used to be only leaving the home once I absolutely had to.

Luckily, I discovered a web-based anxiety help group message board. I used to be stunned how many people were on the market who have been similar to me. There are literally hundreds of people posting on this board every day. It wasn?t quite as good as having the ability to meet in individual, but having that anxiety help group actually helped me. I was in a position to discuss to some of the most supportive, nurturing folks I had ever met. Some of them were at present in the identical scenario that I was in, but other ones had efficiently recovered. All of them were prepared to lend a serving to hand.

Soon, I was ready to truly go to the native anxiousness help group meeting. I used to be so glad to make it there without being overcome by panic. Once I took that step, I was on the road to recovery. Quickly, I used to be taking sedatives and going to a therapist two occasions a week. It took months to even start to feel higher, however I knew I used to be transferring in the appropriate path, and that actually helped me to hang on. With the help of the anxiousness help group and the medicine, I used to be able to figure out what was responsible for me so anxious and unhappy. And one step at a time, I was ready to get my life back together.

NJ town yanks 9/11 marker with politicians' names (AP)

Apologetic officials in a small New Jersey town on Wednesday rushed to remove a stone marker commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack amid an uproar about what the monument didn't include ? any reference to what happened, or the victims ? and what it did ? the names of the mayor and other local officials.

Samir Elbassiouny, mayor of Washington Township, a 6,600-resident community in northwest New Jersey's Warren County, said Wednesday he did not mean to put up a marker that looked as if it was about officials, not the victims.

He also said people who were so angry about the sign were blowing it out of proportion.

"The most important thing is for us not to take away from the intent of the event. It's truly a misunderstanding," he said. "The intent is to honor the victims of 9/11."

The details of the stone, which looks like a small headstone and was installed last week, were reported in Wednesday's editions of The Express-Times of Easton, Pa.

The stone read: "Dedicated September 11, 2011. 10 Year Anniversary." That's followed by the six names of the mayor, committee members and township administrator.

It didn't sit well with some who saw it, including Dennis Ryan a 55-year-old bagpiper and retired Washington Township police officer.

"I mean, how freaking narcissistic can you be?" Ryan asked The Express-Times.

Reaction on newspaper websites was also strong. One sample on the Easton newspaper's site: "Talk about being vain! It is NOT about them! Sick Sick Sick!"

But Elbassiouny said the memorial was a work in progress. The granite was not meant to stand alone, he said, and was put together hastily, he said ? though it words, of course, were actually etched in stone.

The mayor said the town, a little over an hour's drive west from Manhattan, applied about two months ago for a piece of steel recovered from the fallen World Trade Center.

It received a 3-foot tall, 200-pound piece of contorted steel just last Thursday.

Elbassiouny said when it became clear that the steel would arrive before the 10th anniversary of the attacks, there was a scramble to prepare it for Sunday's ceremony.

He said the granite, which cost under $2,000, was ordered along with a brass plaque to hang from the beam itself.

The stone was ready in time. The plaque wasn't.

The town ? which did not lose any residents in the attacks, though the state lost about 700, didn't have time to pick a permanent place to put the display.

Still, the mayor said, there was enough there for a ceremony Sunday.

Despite his misgivings, Ryan and two other bagpipers played.

Elbassiouny said the town will put an overlay on the offensive marker. It will take off the names of the officials and honor the victims of the attacks.

Unlike the first time, he said, he'll ask the entire township committee to approve the exact language.

Alzheimer's Disease and Exercise | Michigan Elder Law Center ...

Many of our client?s family members are dealing with Alzheimer?s diagnoses and we as, Michigan elder law lawyers, help the families navigate the long-term care legal maze that is our health care and governmental benefits system.

There was an interesting article on how exercise helps protect against Alzheimer?s disease.

http://www.hhs.gov/news/healthbeat/2011/09/20110914a.html

Regular exercise may offer some protection against Alzheimer?s. Two studies on people in three states measured the effects of exercise on brain function over five years.

Eric Larson is a commenter, and Executive Director of the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle.

?It?s very likely that regular physical activity improves the ability for blood to circulate to the brain and oxygen to get to the brain. If you have healthy blood vessels, you?re very likely to be able to withstand the stress on very sensitive parts of the brain like the hippocampus.? (16 seconds)

He suggests people exercise regularly.

?Even people who are demented can benefit by regular exercise.? (4 seconds)

The studies in Archives of Internal Medicine were supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Ben Flajnik seems perfect for the role in the sense that he takes the dating show seriously enough - even crediting his recent stint on The Bachelorette with helping him grow as an individual - while remaining pragmatic about it.

Magnificent holiday home by Architecture Bureau

by Simona Ganea, posted in Architecture, on September 14th, 2011

What you see here is a very stylish holiday home, built in 2010. The team that worked at this project was not small by any means. It was composed of Architecture Bureau Ltd that had to work in collaboration with Evan Mayo, BArch ANZIA, Blue Wallace Surveyors Ltd, Caledonian Design Ltd, Stewart Rose Builders Ltd, Intelectric Ltd, Fernlea Joinery Ltd and Hamish Lane Landscapes Ltd. Together they managed to create this amazing house in Mt Maunganui, New Zealand.

It was designed as a holiday home so the design fully reflects this. The house provides great flexibility for the extended family holidays. Even though it was designed as a single bedroom holiday home, it also includes three additional sleeping areas for additional family and guests. The original bedroom and the open plan living areas are oriented towards the ocean view where they can also get plenty of natural light.

The house sits on a compact 135 sq m rectangular plan and it benefits from both natural light and the incredible views towards the Pacific Ocean. The house doesn?t have a front entry. Instead, the living area is opened to the outside and connected to the outdoors. The house was designed as a very light and sustainable home, meant to be a holiday home. Nevertheless, the owners recently decided to use it as a permanent residence. Who can blame them?

Obama would raise taxes to pay for his jobs bill

(AP) ? In a sharp challenge to the GOP, President Barack Obama proposed paying for his costly new jobs plan Monday with tax hikes that Republicans have already emphatically rejected. The reception to his new proposal was no more welcoming, setting the stage for a likely new fight with Congress.

Flanked at the White House by workers he said the legislation would help, Obama declared, "This is the bill that Congress needs to pass. No games. No politics. No delays." He sent it to Capitol Hill saying, "The only thing that's stopping it is politics."

The president's proposal drew criticism from House Speaker John Boehner, who'd previously responded in cautious but somewhat receptive tones to the $447 billion jobs plan made up of tax cuts and new spending that Obama first proposed in an address to Congress last Thursday.

"It would be fair to say this tax increase on job creators is the kind of proposal both parties have opposed in the past. We remain eager to work together on ways to support job growth, but this proposal doesn't appear to have been offered in that bipartisan spirit," Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said.

The biggest piece of the payment plan would raise about $400 billion by eliminating certain deductions, including on charitable contributions, that can be claimed by wealthy taxpayers. Obama has proposed that in the past ? to help pay for his health care overhaul, for example ? and it's been shot down by Republican lawmakers along with some Democrats.

Yet by daring Republicans anew to reject tax hikes on the rich Obama could gain a talking point as the 2012 presidential campaign moves forward, if not a legislative victory.

At a Rose Garden event Monday, Obama brandished his jobs bill and surrounded himself with police officers, firefighters, teachers, construction workers and others he said would be helped by it. Adopting a newly combative tone that's been welcomed by dispirited Democrats, Obama demanded immediate action on the legislation, which the White House sent to Capitol Hill Monday afternoon.

"Instead of just talking about America's job creators, let's actually do something for America's job creators," he said.

Late in the day, he told a group of Spanish-language reporters that if Congress agreed to just a portion of the bill he would accept it while still fighting for more.

"I am going to put forward the entire bill and I have asked them to pass the entire bill. Obviously, if they pass parts of it, I am not going to veto those parts," Obama said. "I will sign it, but I will then say, give me the rest, and I will keep on making that argument."

In the Rose Garden, he told of reading a quotation in a newspaper article from a Republican congressional aide who questioned why Republicans should work with Obama since the result might just be to help the president politically. "That was very explicit," Obama said.

Buck, the Boehner spokesman, said the anonymous quote cited by the president didn't reflect the view of Republican leadership.

And even as Obama was accusing Republicans of playing politics, he and his Democratic allies were marshaling an aggressive political response of their own.

Obama was traveling to Boehner's home state of Ohio Tuesday to promote his jobs plan, and following that with a trip Wednesday to North Carolina, a traditionally Republican state he won in 2008.

He was getting backup from the Democratic National Committee, which announced a television ad campaign starting Monday to promote Obama's jobs plans in key swing and early-voting states and to call on voters to pressure their lawmakers for support. The ads urge viewers to "Read it. Fight for it. ... Pass the President's Jobs Plan."

The back-and-forth was taking on elements of a political campaign, with high stakes for both sides as Obama heads into his re-election fight with the economy stalled, unemployment stuck at 9.1 percent and polls showing deep public unhappiness with his leadership on the economy.

In an appearance later Monday for a group of African-American news Web sites, Obama suggested that even a legislative loss for his plan could translate into a political win for him.

"I need people to be out there promoting this and pushing this and making sure that everybody understands the details of what this would mean, so that one of two things happen: Either Congress gets it done, or if Congress doesn't get it done people know exactly what's holding it up," the president said.

The jobs package would combine tax cuts for workers and employers by reducing the Social Security payroll tax, with spending elements including more money to hire teachers, rebuild schools and pay unemployment benefits. There are also tax credits to encourage businesses to hire veterans and the long-term unemployed.

The White House, which has gotten burned in the past by making overly optimistic job-creation predictions, has avoided estimating how many jobs the package would create. But in an interview Monday on NBC News, Obama embraced an estimate from an outside economist, Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics, and said the bill "could mean an additional 2 million jobs."

The payment method the White House announced Monday would consist of:

?$405 billion from limiting the itemized deductions for charitable contributions and other deductions that can be taken by individuals making over $200,000 a year and families making over $250,000;

?$41 billion from closing loopholes for oil and gas companies;

?$18 billion from requiring fund managers to pay higher taxes on certain income;

?$3 billion from changing the tax treatment of corporate jets.

White House Budget Director Jacob Lew said that Obama will also include those tax proposals in a broader debt-cutting package he plans to submit next week to a congressional "supercommittee" charged with finding $1.2 trillion in savings later this year. He said that the supercommittee would have the option of accepting the payment mechanisms for the jobs bill proposed by Obama, or proposing new ones.

Republicans have indicated they're receptive to supporting Obama's proposed payroll tax cut and finding a way to extend unemployment benefits, though many have rejected Obama's planned new spending. Obama's new proposal Monday to pay for it all by raising taxes without any proposals to cut spending is unlikely to win him any new GOP support for any element of his plan.

"I sure hope that the president is not suggesting that we pay for his proposals with a massive tax increase at the end of 2012 on job creators that we're actually counting on to reduce unemployment," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

The new DNC ads are airing in: Denver; Tampa and Orlando, Fla.; Des Moines, Iowa; Las Vegas; Manchester, N.H.; Raleigh and Charlotte, N.C.; Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio and Norfolk, Richmond and Roanoke, Va.; as well as Washington, D.C.
